When shopping at Sainsburry's or at other supermarkets,
do you usually ask the cashier to pack what you bought in bags, or do you do so yourself?
Is it expected to give the cashier a "tip" for packing help,
or is it part of their job?

Thanks

They always ask but I get the impression they would curse you if you actually took them up on the offer, esp the younger ones, and maybe even deliberately pack it badly so that you would be put off asking again. I am quite happy to do it myself though.

Hello H,

I think it's part of their job. I pack mine myself.

I think it's really important !!!NOT!!!! to use those self service tills that TESCO and some other supermarkets are putting in. I will give my reasons in points.

1. The use of self service tills cuts down on staff and they may become jobless as a result.

2. When you use the self service till you are saving the company money in staffing and all that entails. And they don't give you back the money you saved them on your bill.

3. When you use the self service till you don't even put in a pin number so anyone who has stolen a card can get their shopping on your card FREE. THESE TILLS ARE NOT SECURE.

4. These tills will be used in supermarkets more and more and it turns shopping into an impersonal experience in which people who may not interact with others all day because they are on their own, still have no human connection.

LETS ALL REBEL AND NOT USE THOSE TILLS

I shop at Asda, I pack my own shopping as I have a particular order of what I want in individual bags, its just me and I like to do it myself, no I wouldn't tip an assistant to pack my bags with me.

No you don't have to tip the packer! It's part of their job. I always prefer to pack because I have my own system! I'm a bit obsessed with putting things into categories and in the past people have squashed bread and eggs!

I always pack myself and No you cannot tip the cashier even if you wanted to - ts deemed part of their job and they are not allowed to receive tips - you can be sacked for accepting them xx

Its better if you pack yourself, and quicker unless you are physically unable to and if you want to tip there is usually a charity box at the bottom of the check out.

Sainsbury's staff have to ask if the customer wants help packing. No cashier in any situation is allowed any personal cash on their person, or allowed tips, as it is open to abuse and they would get the sack immediately.

Pack them yourself unless you want the eggs at the bottom of the bag
