What is the earliest age a Doberman pup can be tested for vWD?

to the vet...I want to test for vWD, not vWF. The Allys Essay test is worthless, too many variables and inconsistant result.

There is nothing on VetGen's website saying how soon a pup can be tested. I can get the swab kit for $99.

Friendly Hello,

There is not age for this to be done. It can be done with a swab test. The results come back in about 2 weeks.

Blessings,

Kelly

You can get this done through Vetgen. It is a DNA test with them. I think the Dobe is about $140 to do and it takes about 2 weeks to get the results back. Look at their site here. http://www.vetgen.com/vwddobs.html I don't think there is a specific age to get it done. As you probably know, almost 50% of the dobes are carriers. I think almost 25% of them are affected's which means the other 25% are clear of vWD. I don't think there is a minimum age for this. You should be able to tell from a young age if the dog is affected, a carrier or clear of Von Willibrands. Did you get this pup from a breeder? If so, did they test the breeding pair? Good for you for wanting this done! Von Willibrand's is a disease that can be bred out of the Dobe's now if the breeders would only want to do it.

Any age, as long as blood can be safely drawn from the pup. It only takes about 3-4 days to get the results. The sooner the better. I normally recommend it at the first puppy visit. If people want to research/think about it first (since the expenses of the first puppy visit they planned for usually don't include that), they'll often do it at the second.

For obvious reasons, it should be done before any ear cropping surgery or spaying/neutering. During surgery is not the time you want to find out that your dog has a blood clotting disorder. And if it's present, you want to spay/neuter before puberty, so it's not accidentally passed on.

To the asker, I'm talking about von Willebrand Disease. And I think maybe you meant ELISA assay, not Allys essay? ;-)

You may want to get in touch with your closest chapter of Doberman Pinscher club - which you can find at www.akc.org. They can give you their guidelines. Also, sometimes clubs have certain vets they use that give a discount to club members, or have scheduled events where club members get dogs & pups tested, which can save on costs.

It should not be age specific since the condition would be present at birth.
