What is the duration of a egg that is washed? What happens to the egg? Is there any harm in washing them or should they just be lightly wiped with a damp cloth?

Washing them causes no damage to the egg. It is definitely better to wash them rather than to just wipe them because wiping them has more potential for spreading the germs and bacteria that are on the egg from the chicken feces. A freshly laid egg is good for about 3 weeks under refrigeration.

Eggs are made with a slime that the chickens put on their eggs as it comes out called Bluing. It is to protected the egg from bacteria and other degrading things like yeast, to make it last the incubation period that the hen is suppose to sit on it. Since eggs usually aren't fertilized when on a farm, this doesn't really matter nowadays. Nowadays you do have to watch out for salmonella that is in the fecal matter of chickens which usually gets on the eggs. So we wash the eggs and put them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Eggs then have a mandatory six months expiration date put on them as they head out to the stores, to consumers. Since most eggs are usually eaten within weeks of collecting and washing the eggs, the bluing is not even needed.

It is perfectly safe to wash your eggs. The protective coating that is natural is in the shell so any surface cleaning does not harm the egg. As long as you keeep the eggs at 39 to 40F they will last a long time. I've had eggs last for several weeks without any damage.

go ahead and wash, we use to raise chickens, had a
