My dau just got a fixer-upper and we're redoing the kitchen. It's a blank canvas right now. Since she doesn't have much money (expensive fixes needed!), we would like to invest in decor that will last a few years. Any crystal balls into the decorating future? Thanks for any help you can give!

Why worry about what "they" say is the next big trend....why not start a trend of your own? As your daughter is unpacking her belongings take a look at what she already has in her possessions. Try decorating the kitchen with colorful things that she already has or can add to easily or inexpensively. It might be decorating with a specific color, or it might be a favorite collection. Another choice is always to go for function...such as a collection of gourmet cooking tools placed around the kitchen work area. If you aren't gutting the entire kitchen, take a look at the kitchen as it is and select a feature that she loves that is already in the room and use it for inspiration to decorate the rest of the room. Don't forget that no matter what design or style that you select....the very best decor in a kitchen is sparkling clean!

I did 3 kitchens this year (not bad for a semi-retired mechanic turned woodsmith), and I looked at 20+ houses before buying one in September. This is what I've learned:

All black user-friendly appliances look great. Don't waste money on a fridge with the internet or the like, because about 5% of the people in the market would actually want or use that stuff. Built-in dishwasher is a must, so is icemaker in fridge. These are also small additional costs if you are going to replace the appliances anyway. Also built-in microwave/rangehood. Wood flooring is always big. Laminate wood flooring looks good and is cheap but you have to be careful while installing appliances and cabinets. Granite countertops are great once installed, but are expensive. Get a laminate countertop with a no-drip curved edge. The square edge (or "self" edge as many companies call them now) are very unpopular since the seams catch crud. Do not buy the cheapest cabinets on the market, you will pay in the end (Kitchen Kompact are absolute garbage). You should try to find affordable cabinets made out of plywood cases, not pressboard. Many people, especially older people, do not like cabinet doors with panels (ie cathedral, etc) because the recesses collect dust, but flat panel doors are almost impossible to find at a reasonable cost so you have to make your own decision on this one.

black - a more contemporary feel - is the big trend in decorating today - which is good because you can use any other color you wish with the black - as for actual prints that are in for a kitchen right now we're seeing a lot of apples and the rooster motifs and we're also seeing a lot of use of products that are very versatile that way when you're done using it one way you can start using it another - if you'd like I'd be more than happy to tell you how you can view some of the products we have out there right now that are big - just message me!

Stainless is on the way out , also colored sinks are going down the drain. Stink with white faced appliances and sink, go with a solid neutral color for counters. Accent with prints on towels , drapes and accessories if you find the desire to bump things up. You will find that these selections are also cost effective.
