As you may (or may not o_ô) already know, NYC has not-so-many places for trees, which are needed for air. (Other plants can do it, too, but, trees do it a LOT.)

What sort of things can I do to help out the environment in a city bustling with litterers and pollution?

Thanks.

It just dawned upon me some people may suggest I work at Central Park.

I live 1 hour and 30 minutes away from there. New York City's a BIG city.

First there is alot you can do. Organize a group of young people your age and pick up and recycle cans, trash, food containers etc. Also this same group can find out where there a pieces of ground if any near you not being used, and plant flowers, trees ,vegs, anything. Consider hydroponic gardening and gardening in pots on fire escapes or patios on roof tops. It just takes a little ingenuity. Get some wood, may be scavaged somewhere, make a square, fill it with dirt or good soil and start planting. Don't waste food, either eat it, or freeze leftovers for use later. So many people are starving its a sin to waste food. Donate unused items to be recycled to the salvation army, a shelter for the homeless, or there is a organization called freecycle.org, people put things on this internet site for free they don't want anymore and other people contact them by email to take these things. You could arrange for them to be picked up at a safe place other then your home if you don't know the people. Or say I will put it outside at this address at a certain time and they can pick up the bags of clothing or whatever it is you don't want. Don't waste water, talk to your parents if they own a home to get and ecology friendly tiolet that uses less water, when you do dishes ,if you do them, use a plastic wash basin and rinse in another basin filled with hot water, instead of letting the water run. Donate old blankets to a shelter or to the homeless they need them. There are a million things a young person could do to improve their environment if they are committed to doing it. Either on your own with a packet of seeds or getting a group of friends inspired to make a difference in the world. It starts with one person, the first step, then another and you make a difference. Good Luck!!! You sound like a nice person.

First off, NYC is the last state you want to start with. I suggest you move out of there and into a state where your ideas might have a better chance of having any kind of success. NOBODY in NY can care less about the environment. All they care about is, "Hey you!!! Move that cab outta the way. Eh? Forget about it!!!"

You can always help the environment....
You can start by using public transportation, and turning off lights and other switches when you're not using them. Throw garbage into garbage cans, try and recycle, etc. If you really care about this topic, there are many sites in the net that can help you.

The best thng to do is
"clean after yourself" ..... the biggest contribution u can make to a cleaner environment.

There is saying "if u reform yourself, there is one rascal less in this world"
