have a some male & female penpals from USA (lovely people) but they all thought it was 'odd' when they learnt that I get changed & will shower with my male buddies. Also that when I visit my friends in Netherlands & France we all get changed & shower before going out or go swimming sauna naked together. (Nothing sexual what so ever, I have a boyfriend just to make this clear!) The folks from USA thought it was odd at our 'European' behaviour. I had my friends visit from the states. The american girls would change shower with us but the american boys wouldn't, but the European boys did The US boys got all emabarrsed when the girls sunbathed topless. Why is this ? I find general American outlook on this strange. Anybody else found this ?

I'm a american, but most of my friends are European. So I basically learn to lose my shyness about being nude around others.

Personally if I have a girlfriend, I wouldn't take shower or change in front of other girls or approve her doing it with other guys. I wouldn't do it because it could lead her to being suspicous or jealous. I wouldn't want her to do it because I would feel like she is putting herself in dangerous situtation.

On other hand I don't have a girlfriend right now. So I wouldn't have any real problem with doing it around other girls or guys. However on other hand I would NEVER dream of doing it around other american!

I was at Croatia beach two years ago and odd thing is I didn't see anyone sunbath topless. Personally I don't think I would be embarassed at all if they all were topless because I wouldn't be only one there.

About the answer who say European isn't sexy is stupid! I think Slavic girls are the most beautiful girls I have ever saw. Many other European girls I met are very good looking too.

It's the great American way to be prudish. I am in the Navy, and while visiting ports in the Med, the females had to where one piece bathing suits, while most Europeans go topless. It is against the law for a woman to show her breasts on a beach in the US, unless the beach is specifically a "nude beach." Just another fine example of cultural differences around the world.

No idea which country you are from, but European women in general are not particularly attactive unless they are teenagers, They have flat bums and usually very pale skin, so being naked outdoors doesn't really inspire anything sexual. It's true. Maybe you are the exception :)

In america, or south america, a bikini is used to cover the intimate bits that make men exited when they see them. Even if it's a tiny bikiny! I went to a naturist beach once and it was extremely uncomfortable to have EVERYONE staring at me, terrible.
At the gym, it is usually the fattest women who walk around naked and stroking themselves with body cream, like on display, and the rest of us (in london) we use cubicles to get changed and a towel in the sauna.

I could never get away with showering with a guy who is not my partner and keep him seeing me as just a friend. Maybe we are too hot for that......

I think Americans are still taught that nudity=sex, which is obvious from some of the replies!

When my wife & I went on holiday to Florida, a few years ago, the first thing she had to do was buy a bikini top as it never occurred to her to take one for the pool & beach!

The UK still has some of the hang-ups Americans have, but that is changing, fortunately!

Despite what you see on television and movies, Americans are actually incredibly modest when it comes to sexuality or nudity. What I find strange is that girls like Paris Hilton flaunt themselves constantly, we see breasts in movies all the time, but people that want to breast feed their babies in public are ridiculed or told they are dirty. It's a horrible double standard, that we as women are allowed to be sexy when its for a man's pleasure, but any other time we're shunned and treated like our bodies are dirty.

My OPINION is that Americans have a different, more conservative view of human sexuality. To be nude in front of your friends can be considered TOO PERSONAL. We try to respect each other, not that you don't, and our personal spaces are places reserved for someone special.

But this is just my opinion.

In a nutshell, the Americans are the offspring of a bunch of prudes. Look up 'puritans' on wikipedia.

Anyhow, in the end, different country, different mores you know what I'm saying? As long as we don't bash each other over the head because of it.

No...yes, It's strange to alot of ppl..b/c where you come from, nudity is valued, and bodies are accepted! here In the USA, everyone judges you, no matter what! we have topless beaches and resorts, and that's probably the only places you won't find bitter judgement against u or your mates! good luck to u!

Americans descended largely from English Puritans and Calvinists who took a dim view of anything not directly related to money, especially sex and anything that could remind them of what they couldn't have; thus the general nudity phobia.
