....I get so many answers telling me to "paddle his butt" or some such?

Are we really that slap happy towards our children in this country?

I'm not completely anti-smacking, but there has to be a VERY good reason for me to do it.

People are entitled to their opinion of course, but I'm surprised that this so often is their opinion.

Pretty Helen - you hit the nail on the head. My son has been smacked twice in his life - once for running into the road in a fit of temper and he was a second or two from being hit by a car. I smacked his bottom there and then. He never did it again.

Donna Donna, have my questions taught you nothing about the quality of people you get on this god forsaken site?
Take it all with a pinch of salt.

Since smacking kids on behinds has become the no-no see how many people are battling to get their kids to listen to them, make their beds. Nowadays the kids are in charge. We are parents and that is what a parent should do is teach kids the difference between right and wrong. If they are naughty a smack on the behind will not kill them. But parents want to be their kids biggest pals so they are scared of reprimanding or punishing them and when they grow into juvenile delinquents those same parents want to know from others where did i go wrong.

I am anti-smacking - however - i do know that i couldnt stop myself from lashing out and smacking a bottom if a child went to dash out infront of a road or tried to put their hand in a fire. These are the only times when i would think a light smack is acceptable.

The only problem is - there are people out there who take a light smack to extremes..... and also - once you have smacked a child - you have to smack them harder the next time to get the same reaction - where would the cycle end??!!

It's a matter of fact. Adults who were given a good dose of discipline as a child learnt right from wrong. Nowadays, the anti-slap brigade have stabbed themselves in the foot, and that's why we have so much of this trouble caused by the younger generation nowadays.
Did anyone feel the necessity for ASBOs when you were young? - not that they're any good, but do you see what I'm trying to get at?

Hitting a child does not do any good. It will just make them angry. I have never had to really hit my kids other than a playful swat on the behind once in a while. Not hard enough as to feel pain.

I think my mother only ever smacked me once. I was generally well behaved and could be persuaded to do things by reasoning 99% of the time.
I think for many people the path of least thought is the path of least resistance.

Good child discipline requires good family communication.

Giving instructions and consequences, planning for good behavior, listening to your child, holding family meetings, and resolving conflict are just a few of the opportunities parents have to encourage self-discipline and maintain good family relationships. When confronting a problem, your style of communication will help or hinder a successful resolution.

Sorry, but I believe that the lack of a little discipline in the home is the cause of much of the disrespect prevalent in society nowadays. Some youths believe that there is no consequence to behaving badly.

I think that it's the maturity level of the people answering questions in here now. They seem to be teens and pre-teens and I think that they think it's cute to give off-the-cuff answers. Like telling people to hit their children or other immature garbage.
When you ask serious questions, you're just going to have to weed through the crap until you, hopefully, find someone mature enough and with enough "background" to give you some sage and useful advise.
Unfortunately, I think that this forum has become the place for stupid questions and even dumber answers.
Good Luck! And......... don't go hitting your children. No one likes to be hit!

I'm pretty old school and think kids deserve swatted from time to time.....but anything more than one swat on the butt to get his/her attention is overdoing it. My wife usually takes 2-3 swats but she's a wuss and her aim sucks. I don't think that we are slap happy at all, usually just the fear of a whoopin is all my kids need to know that they are treading to close to "the line". I should add that our children love us very much and they are also VERY well behaved.
