My PC has got a worm but my security software has a database that's 8 months out of date. I need to get in and the only way is to boot from CD. I also need to get some utilities loaded on to get rid of the worm.

I need some utilities - Hijack This, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, WinPatrol, FSecure DOS Level scanner & utilities as well as a registry editor - on a bootable linux CD. Does any one have any idea how I can get these on?

Right, I know the utilities are not pre installed. I really should have explained that that's what the real issue was. Secondly I'm creatig the live CD on my own PC to help sort out the infected one which is my mate's. I haven't personally checked out the PC in question so don't know what worm it is. So you think that the best way forward is to reformat the disk and then reinstall win XP?

You could go to the ubuntu site and download their CD. Follow the instructions and get some .iso burning software. Microsoft reommends this power toy:

EDIT: Now that you've given a bit more information, yes. . . it's quite possible to run a live Linux CD on the infected computer and do a scan for viruses, etc. I think the reformat and reinstall should be a last ditch effort after all other remedies have been exhausted. This article might help:

[a] If, as you say, you've got a worm, then all the files of your "security database" are infected by now. Retrieving them will only serve to bring back the worm.

[b] You seem to have the wrong impression about a Linux live CD. Linux live CDs are where you can run the OS from the bootable CD instead of installing it. No utilities come preloaded on it which will help you get rid of the worm.

[c] It would have helped if you had mentioned the name of the worm and whether or not you are using Windows XP, etc. for us to have been able to help you properly.

[d] The only way to get rid of a worm which has not yet had it's definition listed is to do it in regedit. However, that's not a job for an amateur and we'd know whether or not to recommend this measure, only if we knew the name of the worm.

[e] Under the circumstances, my advise to you is (i) format the disc and reinstall your OS. (ii) This is because there's no way you can download a clean copy of either Ubuntu or Mandriva Linux on an infected PC and make a good live CD when you have a worm onboard.

To make a stay CD, burn your ISO photograph on the cd with any photograph burning application. Then restart your laptop with your CD already inserted. in the experience that your boot putting reads the CD first you need to use the stay CD, or you will ought to alter it out of your BIOS. i'm hoping it helped :)

I use Slax, a distro that can be run from cd. (see link below )
Download the iso file and burn onto cd. Note you must use the iso burning method for the disc to be bootable.

download an iso image of the linux distro you want to use, knoppix would probably be best:
http://www.knoppix.org/

check these pages out for instructions on burning iso images:
http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm
http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm
http://www.iceteks.com/articles.php?act=view&article=burniso&p=1&

Once you have burned the image make sure your bios are set to boot from the cd/dvd drive first, then put the cd you have just burned into your drive & reboot.
