As a highly skilled software engineer I have considered working in the US. However visa restrictions prevent me from travelling to look for a job unless i go on my 90 day visitors visa and if i get a job offered it takes the state department ages to process the paperwork. I am a degree educated UK Anglo Saxon citizen with Family and children and not likely to have links to Al Qaeda and yet it appears that visas are granted easily to Indian subcontinent workers and South east Asians. Why does America treat its closest allies so bad and why can't they fast track visa applicaions for western europeans ?

First I'd like to say, I wish more people like you would come here.

Because the US is obsessed with competiting with poverty stricken countries. The less education and job training you have, the lower wage you're willing to take, the better chance you have of coming here. My husband has a Bachelor's degree and had to take a 12 thousand dollar a year cut in pay to keep his job.

The value of our home went down several thousand dollars within one year. Utilites, other necessities and taxes all went up. 45 years of hard work down the drain all in the name of competition.

Our government is working hard to bring in uneducated poor people to work at sub level wages, the goal being to bring our wages to the level of China, India and Mexico. Unfortunately, so far so good, we're looking more like Mexico everyday.

We're headed for Socialism. Our American dream is turning into a nightmare.

If we didn't have so many unskilled and uneducated coming illegally and causing schools and health care to fail in many areas, we could have a more logical program.

Somehow there has been success in framing the issue as a 'race' issue (for the little known 'race' of 'illegal aliens') so rules are tighter across the board, to make it clear how truly PC we are.

To me this is a bit like amputating both legs when only one is infected, but I have only one vote.

They ARE talking about raising the H1B skilled visas, but made the mistake of rolling that into the amnesty/guest worker unskilled worker bill, and the whole thing stalled. Some are trying to differentiate between skilled and unskilled. Since skilled workers tend to put back through taxes etc the amount they take out in services including education, that certainly seems logical to me.

Stay tuned to after November 7, though. The possibilities will be more defined at that point.

This seems to have to do with the number of people applying from each country ... the UK has exceeded the quota, apparently for years to come ... you can't even apply for the lottery .. it would appear that Mexico has exceeded their quota of applicants too, but that doesn't seem to bother our authorities ... the whole immigration situation in the U.S. is one giant fiasco, and all I can say is I think most people would prefer people of your caliber to immigrate here, you'd easily get a well paid job here and pay for your own expenses., and you would immigrate legally, but who listens to the American people any more ... :(

If it's any consolation to you, it is equally difficult for Americans to emigrate to the U.K. ... go figure ...

its almost imposible to get anywhere with the immigration people, they seem to want you to fill in soo much paperwork, It seems the Mexican way is the best, slip the fence or walk acros the border, its not like they send anyone whos illegal back anyway and one day there will be a amnesty and those who are ilegal will become citizens overnight.

The US appears to favor those who do things illegally rather than the proper way.

The US is democratic: we don't make a special queue for folks who happen to be of some particular ethnic origin.
