If the victim is pregnant or too large for the first aid provider to wrap their arms around, the person giving the Heimlich manoeuvre positions himself behind the victim as usual, but moves his arms up into the victims armpits, and makes a fist in the centre of the chest, over the sternum. The rescuer makes swift inward movements until the victim becomes unconscious or the object is dislodged.

First lean them forward and administer short sharp slaps between the shoulder blades. This is normally sufficient.
If that doesn't work you can perform the heimlich manouver by standing behind the person, putting your arms round them. Make your hands into a fist under their ribcage and pull up. It shouldn't matter about their size, flab tends to move. Try the back slaps first in all choking situations. Remember to lean them forward.

Lay them on their back with head to side( so what the are choking on does not land on your face) and push your knee up and under the diaphragm (the muscle under the rib cage that inflates your lungs) press in and up firmly with moderate force until the object is dislodged.
This uses the diaphragm to raise air pressure in the airway where the food is lodged - like squeezing a balloon or piping bag.
The regular Heimlich maneuver uses the person's own weight to apply this pressure.
**An accurate sign a person is really choking is if they cannot talk.

Hey Snuggle,
I am a registered nurse. Actually the young man below gave you a correct answer, you can lay on the floor and someone can perform the Heimlich maneuver that way, it is more difficult and is not as effective as the upright method. You can also perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself by finding a chair or table edge and thrusting against it. Unfortunately that too takes practice. It might be beneficial to you to take a basic CPR class from your local Red Cross. They can also teach you how to effectively perform the maneuver on yourself and others. It is a good course, easily understood even with no medical background. It's better to know what to do than to hope that someone trained is around when you are choking. Be safe.

There is a choice of two methods. First you can lie the person on their back and apply pressure down and upwards from the belly button. If the person is conscious, you can also bend them over the back of a chair. Either of these methods will likely cause them to vomit, but in the process whatever is causing the blockage would be dislodged. At any rate, as long as a person is able to cough, they should be left to it. So long as they can cough, some air is getting through and they may be able to dislodge the item on their own. The heimlech maneuver and the other methods have risks of rib fractures and internal damage to the liver- so should be used only when it becomes obvious no air is getting through and there becomes a need to save life that overrides the risks.

You are supposed to hit a choking person in the back between the shoulder blades before the Heimlich ....which was what I was taught in my first aid course recently.

You can also save yourself by leaning over a chair back forcibly and fast to dislodge what ever is blocking the airway.

I think you can lay them on their back and do the 'heimlich' from the front.
