Garhoyles were built on the outside of buildings to ward away evil spirits/ the devil; if you keep these demented, tourmented and strange creatures facing away from your buildings (sometimes they double as watershoots) then the devil will not enter (that the idea at least)

Gargoyoles are often found on the outside of churches (Notre Damb in Paris is a good example) and other civic buildings (as a univeristy would have been when Oxford was constructed)
