Crumpets.

Grill the side without holes first, then when brown turn them and put some cheese on top and continue grilling until the cheese melts. Meanwhile, have a can of baked beans heating in a saucepan. When all is ready, put the crumpets au gratin on a plate and pour over the beans.

Sounds disgusting, but trust me it is nice, and more's the point -filling!!

You didn't mention whether you cook much, or prefer ready meals, but I will guess that you want fast prep food. You must eat protien to think straight in school. You can't leave it out and do well. Carb's will give your body energy, so you need them too. Instant oats, just add hot water, whatever fruits and veggies you like that are on sale, good bread with prepared cheese for a quick grilled or toasted cheese sandwhich, eggs, eggs, eggs, hard boiled alone or on salads, scrambled alone or with your cheese & veggies. Dry healthy cereals for snacks, or nuts. Stay away from ramen, no nutrients, lots of sodium to swell you up. Mac&chs a better option. Buy vitamins, you will need a good multi-vitamin & mineral supplement, because you will not be able to always make great well rounded meals, and study, and all the other things students will do. Eat as healthy and cheap as you can, it is possible. Remember the fruits and vegetables on sale are your friend.

I think veg are relatively cheap now days, try this....

Whilst cooking some pasta, fry together:
Cherry tomatoes
Courgette
Red pepper
Mushroom

When pasta is cooked and drained, chuck it all baking dish with the veg. Throw lots of grated cheese on the top and bake in the oven till the cheese starts to bubble.

This should last a couple of days, so nuke it the next day and serve it with garlic bread.

Sheppard Pie is cheap to make:

Fry mince and onion and place in a casserole dish and top with buttered mash. If you cook some carrots and peas to have on the side, use the water to make the gravy.

Boil the veg and pour the water into the cooked mince, add gravy granules, drain and put into casserole dish, this makes really yummy gravy and you retain the goodness from the veg.

Hope these ideas help you a tad!

Best tip is to get stuff in bulk get a massive bag of pasta and rice.

Get tinned tomatos and kidney beans

spices get chilli powder curry powder and cumin

With these and adding a few ingredients you can make easy good food and it costs next to nothing. I only spend a tenner a week on my food shopping.

Stirfy is cheap just get a bag of the veg and some soy sauce

Bolognaise sauce . Whack some mince in a pan with onions fry them off once everything is brown and cooked stick in tinned toms and stir around add some chilli and cumin to taste

Also with bolognaise you can add kidney beans and a little more chilli and it becomes chilli con carne.

And with this you can have tacos or you can put it into wraps cover in cheese and shove into the oven for enchildas

Stew - Get some stewing steak and cover it in flour and fry it for a couple of minutes until brownish . Shove it in a pan add carrots beans ( anything you want ) add stock usually about half a pint and leave it to simmer for two hours with the lid on until gravy like.

Curry is cheap as well generally shove potatos carrot chickpeas once again anything you want in here but remember to put in tinned toms to create a sauce use loads of curry powder and its a curry type dish .

A quick and easy meal:

1lb or 500gms of minced (ground) meat
I can tomato soup - 16 ounces or 440 grams
3 generous handfulls of macaroni
2 beef or 1 OXO cube

Brown mince, drain off any fat, add with all remaining ingrediences in a medium saucepan, add 1 can of water using the can from the tomato soup as the measurement, bring to boil and simmer until macaroni is soft.

You can also add chopped bacon and onions if you wish but gently fry them before you brown the meat.

A favourite in my house and will provide one person with 2 meals.

Invest in a G***** F****** grill with what's left of your student loan.

Buy whatever meat, fish, veggies you like and keep in frig. Hack them into large slices and slap them all in the grill 10 mins. before you want to eat with a dribble of olive oil (Sausages take 5 mins longer). Don't know that it works with baked beans but they're better cold anyway.

You won't have to dirty a saucepan, or use the oven. Wipe the grill over while it's warm as doesn't need washing.
The food will be the best you've tasted, will be fresh and healthy. What more could you want?

Go and find out when the local supermarket has bargains that needs to be sold urgently.

Local markets can be a good source of cheap veggies. And borrow a copy of student recipe bookm from the library. It will give you loads of cheap easy ideas.

Go to your local butchers about 10 mins b4 they shut as they often have meat at slashed down prices.
Things like mince you can make so many meals out of it ie shepherds pie, bolognese, mince and onion pies (pastry is cheap to make)
also things like noodles, beans and sausages (again you butchers might have sausages cheap) are nice.
Egg makes a great meal
Scrambled eggs, fried egg, omelette, pancake.
Chips are great for a meal companion too
