I switched him off of Iams to a Royal Canin special diet not too long ago, as the Iams was making him scratch himself horribly and also diaherra, the "Sensitivity Control" from RC solved both. But not the bizarre licking thing.

He's a 12 year old persian.

Advice? If it's minerals he's missing, any recommendation on a supplement (he doesn't do pills)

Thanks!

MY YORKIE (11 YRS OLD) WAS JUST DOING THAT ...FOR A WHILE...I TOOK HER TO THE VET...AND THEY DID SOME TEST...AND TOLD ME SHE WAS TOO SICK TO HELP...

HER BODY WAS NOT MAKING WHITE BLOOD CELLS.....AND I FELL APART....SHE PASSED AWAY...ON MAY 24 TH 2006......

AND....I KEPT TELLING THE VET OVER & OVER... THAT SHE WAS LICKING THE FIREPLACE AND ROCKS...AND TRYING TO EAT DIRT.....OMG ( I TRUSTED THEM)...THEY DID NOT LISTEN TO ME,

MAYBE IF THEY HAD...SHE WOULD NOT HAVE DIED.......

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT WAIT....AND DO NOT LET THEM TELL YOU THAT NOTHING IS WRONG....GET A 2ND OPINION...JUST TO MAKE SURE...

I DO NOT WANT TO SCARE YOU...BUT.......THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME....AND I AM SO EMPTY WITHOUT MY LITTLE 3 # YORKIE......

I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG......I COULD NOT STOP HER FROM LICKING THE BRICKS..OR ROCKS...OR DIGGING IN THE PLANTS DIRT...AND EATING IT.

I GUESS SHE WAS IN NEED OF IRON...OR SOME OTHER MINERAL.....DUE TO HER LOSS OF BLOOD...I THINK IT WAS LEUKEMIA FROM WHAT THE TEST SHOWED.... ...

(ALMOST ZERO WHITE & or RED CELLS)

CALL YOUR VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Your cat may well have anemia. Licking bricks is one sign of anemia. When one of my cats took to licking bricks, he did have serious anemia, but it was not due to a dietary deficiency. His body had stopped making red blood cells. That kind of anemia is called non-regenerative anemia. No food or supplements was going to help that problem.

You need to get your cat to the vets ASAP and have a blood test done. That is essential.

In my cat's case, he probably developed the non-reneragative anemia due to having been prescribed the eye-ointment Chloramphemical. The package label said it can cause a blood disorder in cats. Since my cat did get a blood disorder, it had to have been due to that medicine. My cat was lucky. He got a blood transfusion, and did survive, but he was almost dead at first.

Please, get your cat's blood checked!!

My cat is a Himalayan Persian. Is your cat declawed, because that can lead to bizarre behavior and my cat tries to eat and bite and lick everything. Maybe he's confused, because both of those are the colors of cat food!!!

It might be just a cat thing, but those are strange things to lick. My 14 year old Burmese likes to lick the dust off my bedroom furniture, and she's extremely healthy for a cat her age.
