pick one that chooses you. If it comes up to you and you feel warmth and love for it, that's the one to buy. You'd know what cat to buy because you would feel different towards it... it just happens. good luck with finding the right furry friend x
...and you don't necessarily need to choose an 'ugly' cat because someone out there will take pity on it...it's about feeling connected with the cat that really matters.

You could always ask them which cat had been there the longest and really needs a second chance, although that would depend on what sort of cat you wanted, if you wanted one that would sit on your knee straight away it probably wouldn't be the best thing to do. Shy cats are very rewarding once you manage to break down the barrier, although i have known it take a couple of years for a cat that has had a bad start to really trust me.
It is always nice to give a golden oldie a new start, but again, it depends on what sort of lifestyle you have and what you want from your pet.
I am sure that you will get a lovely cat (is there any other kind!). Good luck with your choice!

At Maddie's Center in San Francisco we would have over 75 cats up for adoption over a weekend. I would be there Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday at closing as many as forty would have found homes. They also adopt out "behavior" cats who are being rehabilitated where the screening and "education" of adopters is more stringent - those cats may take longer to find the right home for them.
I was an adoption counselor there for many years and I found that cats and adopters made a very serendipitous connection and the two chose one another. So there is a special one there who wants you and you will want he/she. Just be patient.
Every cat is beautiful and special in his "person" eyes and the right one for you is there waiting.

I worked at a shelter with the cats. You should ask for someone who is familiar with the cats. Tell them a little about your home life (kids, alone, other animals, etc.). Tell them alittle of what you may be looking for. The shelter employee should be able to recommend a few cats. Ask if they have a "Get Acquainted Room". Visit with each cat to see if you and the kitty are a match. You will know when the the prefect cat comes along.

Heartbreaking isnt it? Lots of people have this problem and that is why lots of people avoid going to these places.
Dont give up. Here's what you do ; Ring and speak to the receptionist and explain it to her. Dont worry - she's heard it before - tell her what sort of a cat you are after - age, sex, colour, long or short hair etc and ask her to select one that matches, or nearly matches what you would like. Then tell her what time you will be there and she will have him ready for you to pick up so you dont have to actually go into the cattery part. Your new cat will be there waiting for you. It really is a lovely way to rescue a new cat. We really need to get the word out that it can be done this way as it would help more people to adopt these cats. Enjoy your new friend!

Firstly, you need to stay objective. When you go there, if you are planning to take just one, stick to that. I understand its harsh, as I would have exactly the same feeling, wanting to give all of them a home. After this, is all a question of feeling. See which cat seems to warm up to you, to want to interact. When my friends have been in such a situation they always told me that their pet "chose them", either by coming up to them, being more playful, or whatever suited their personality. Also remember what kind of cat you want : a playful one (maybe too nervous), a calm one (could be boring), an independent kitten...
Just follow your instinct, ignoring the one that wants to take all of them home :) , and Im sure you will find the right kitten, you will make the right choice, dont worry!

Will it let you hold it? Does it like your smell? Does it purr? Does it make you feel happy? Does it come up to you to sus you out? How long has it been there? Ask that when you have several you can't decide on and take the one that's been there the longest.
And then when you've picked one out make sure you get it desexed. Which is usually a requirement of the RSPCA anyhow, if it hasn't been done already.
Best wishes!

Some of them have a cat room where they have several cats roaming freely. I usually go into one of those rooms and sit down on the floor to see which cat will approach me first. When I went looking for a cat back in September, I ended up getting a little black Angora kitten. There were lots of kids there looking for kittens, and none of them were interested in her (plus I have a soft spot of black cats). It was a good decision.

Personally, I'd pick the one that no-one would want. Unique. You really would know which one to pick, or let them pick you! They are in charge at the end of the day.So hard. Good luck. But you're a star rescuing a cat, & not buying a kitten from the paper. Another little life saved. Bless you. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It's hard and I left with 2 so they would have each other so I guess just play with a few for a lil bit and see how they react. Dont pick an extremely hyper crazy one, I made that mistake and it ended up having neurological problems and died a year later. But good luck....
