Antibiotics are NOT meant for things like a cold and cough! I'm sorry, but I cannot overemphasize this. One, you are killing off your normal flora which will leave you open to other illnesses. Second, bacteria will start to build a resistance to the antibiotic. So once you get an infection, you won't be able to get rid of it. Antibiotics are not a cure all. Please stop taking the antibiotics! Try an over-the-counter cough and cold medicine. Also, consider visiting your doctor to see if something more serious is going on. STOP the antibiotic use.
This site should explain why I am so adamant about antibiotic use. You could take it with you when visit the doctor next time. know its directed to parents, but it applies to everyone.

Hello:
In reality, inappropriately used antibiotics will do nothing except place the patient at an unnecessary risk for potential side effects. In addition, too much use of an antibiotic can cause bacteria to become increasingly antibiotic resistant. Consequently, the resistant bacteria will not respond to the antibiotic in the future when this therapy may truly be needed. Thus, antibiotics should be used sparingly and with caution in all situations. If a physician tells a person that an antibiotic is unlikely to be helpful, it is in that person's best interest to not take the antibiotic.

I hope you take the time to read both articles, as taking antibiotics too often unless it is an infection is NOT good for you.
Good luck

If you have a cold or cough that persists for a year, I suggest consulting a physician. And yes, there may be a side-effect. If you keep getting the same strain of bacteria, prolonged treatment with antibiotics might result in the bacteria developing an immunity to the antibiotic. It's the same reason physicians limit the prescription of antibiotics, especially the more powerful general antibiotics.

There is probably no side effect to the antibiotic itself, however, if you have been taking the same antibiotic repeatedly it is possible that you have either helped create or have acquired an infection that is resistent to that antibiotic. It is possible that your cold and cough are the result. Perhaps you need to see a doctor and get a different type of antibiotic prescribed?

Antibiotics are no use against viruses, which most colds and coughs are. If you take them frequently, the bacteria in your system which should be destroyed by them will gradually build up an immunity, which will make it moer difficult to treat you in the future. You will also start to release these 'super bacteria' into your environment, so that everyone else gets more resistant bacteria as well. That's why you should always finish a course of anti-biotics, so that bacteria don't get a chance to be half-killed by them and build into stronger bacteria).

Antibiotics should be taken for bacterial infections only. Normally taking them for a cold won't really hurt you, but it won't help the cold. However, you can build up resistance to antibiotics and they won;t work when you do need them

yes. antibiotics should only be taken for specific illnesses....taking them for a common cold is actually hurting your body - not helping it. Check out WEBMD.com for more information on antibiotics.

Taking anti-biotics target bacteria - the common cold is caused by virus and anti-biotics has no effect.
If you take anti-biotics all year it will compromise your good bacteria in your body - Taking anti-biotics is not a joking matter..... make sure you have a good physician who can monitor this.
