As an Australian I would say Melbourne would be the better place to live. Canberra is a small city (300,000) people so it can get a little boring.Canberra is also colder than Melbourne and the cost of living is higher.
Melbourne is much more cosmopolitan and offers more opportunities for work etc.
Enjoy your time in Australia.

Melbourne's better because its a more vibrant city. Canberra is like Washington D.C., where all the government buildings and offices are. If you need to find work, Melbourne would be a better choice.

Melbourne is the better choice. It is a larger, more appealing city with lots of work choices because it has industry as well as hospitality to choose from. You should consider Sydney if you can because it is simply the best.
