Quite - you'd think it was the least he could do after getting her knocked up.

I don't know - these absent fathers, eh?

He WAS all-seeing. He told Joseph in a dream what would happen, and He was compassionate enough to deliver them and the baby Jesus from danger.

Besides that, God's intervention in taking Mary and Joseph and Jesus to Egypt not only fulfilled prophecy, but in the process of the journey God was able to show Mary and Joseph that He was in control. And from looking at the events in the Temple when Jesus was 12, and later in Jesus' earthly ministry and eventual crucifixion and resurrection, it was a gradual process of bringing Mary and Joseph and all others in Jesus' earthly life to trust that what the Father said about the Son was true. But until they trusted the Father in the little things, it would've been really hard to trust Him in the big things.

Because that's what was prophesied. EVERY SINGLE circumstance surrounding Christ's birth, life, death, and resurrection was in accordance with the prophesies.
Read Isaiah. It said that Emmanuel would be born humbly, and come from a poorer family, but of a royal line. He was.
It's how it had to be.

And no, it's not because it was Christmas. Christmas didn't even EXIST at the time.

Great question. Don't know the definitive answer but here's some things I'm considering...

TO EMPHASIZE JESUS' POVERTY--God could've had the best accomadations made for himself, yet he chose to show his humility. Whenever poorer people have babies we will look at them with dignity because someone as great as Jesus had humble beginings as well.

TO BE PLACED IN THE MANGER--Bethlahem means, 'House of Bread' and Jesus said he was the Bread of Life and it's great foreshadowing that he'd be place into a manger--where animals eat out of.

Because the whole idea was that Jesus the saviour had to come from the lowest-of-the-low. He was born is a stable and during his preaching days lived as a vagrant. Jesus was happy to be among the ill, publicans and the outcast.

The last shall be first and the first shall be last. Get it?

Maybe he had maxed out his Visa buying all the stuff he needed to create the universe?! Therefore, he couldn't get M & J in anywhere good?!

Seriously though, maybe it is so we would see Jesus as one of us and he would be more approachable that way? If he was a big king in fancy robes, trailing clouds of glory, you might be scared to go up and say hi?

A God should not get directly involved with his subjects. Direct, quantifiable intervention would lead people to rely on God, and not on themselves. A good God (and by that I don't mean a benevolent God. I mean a God who does his job well) will know better than to directly interact with humans. I think it's better to use an indirect approach.
