Making an inference.
Ocasionally, John's friends say bad things about people that irritate him.
So what does the sentence mean?
1-He becomes annoyed.
2-He becomes cheerful.
3-He forgets about his problems.

To free you.I thought of it this way.
When his friends talk bad about people that annoy him, so he becomes happy and cheer up.Because they annoy him, so he does care if his friends talked bad about them or not.

An inference in this context refers to - what does the text suggest to you? How about eliminating the ones that are obviously incorrect? For example, does that statement which contains the word IRRITATE even remotely suggest that he is cheerful???
