Hi i'm 19 5'10'' about 200 lbs and was wondering how much calories i need per day to function or a good way to determine that a rough estimate would be nice. As for physical activity i work out 3 days a week at the gym and run the days i don't work out except for sundays which is church days. As for other exercise the only other thing is walking around for classes mon - fri. Currently i'm taking protein shakes every night and every morning which is adding about 1000 calories to my diet, but since i'm in college It's hard for me to get enough protein so this is about the only way. as for the rest of the day i try to only consume 1,400 calories, but i'm almost certain at 2,400 calories a day i won't be losing much weight which is my goal. Thanks

For a more precise number, you can go to menshealth.com. They can compute your daily caloric needs for maintaining your weight or for losing it, based on your activity level and age, if i remember correctly.

At 5-10, 200 pounds your BMI is about 29, a little on the high side unless you are very muscular.

Using the Shapeworks Body Calculator developed By Dr. Heber your Resting Metabolic Rate, the calories you would burn in a day at rest is about 2100 Calories. To lose weight you need consume about 500 calories less than you RMR or about 1600 calories a day.

I don't know what Protien Shakes you are driking, but if they are Meal Replacement Shakes, such as the Shapeworks Formula ! then you can cut two meals a day to quickly reduce your caloric intake.
