Why is it that we no longer see GREENGAGES for sale in our Fruit Shops (Greengrocers) or Supermarkets?

Perhaps some of those responsible for 'buying' can answer this question.

The greengage is a really delicious sweet fruit.

Is greengage jam still on sale in the U.K. and from where can it be bought?

I've seen Greengages in supermarkets and farm shops but being seasonal they're never around long. Greengage jam can still be purchased but they best ones (less preservatives etc..) will also be limited to the growing season. A good place to try is http://www.realjam.co.uk/home.htm .

I saw greengages just a few weeks ago in a local fruit shop in Walsall.

I have to say though that I didn't buy them although I love greengages as they were the saddest ones I have ever seen - lord knows how old they were. They were faded, soft and almost at the wrinkled stage. I don't buy fruit that has a similar description to me!

All 'Fruit' has a season when they are best and ripe (like strawberries, no way as good now as when you get them in the summer) unless they grow in foreign country's where they have the spring/summer climate of the u.k in thier winter.
We have still got them in Wigan, dont know about the jam :s
