Are these women called transvestites? if a man wears skirts and has long hair and acts like a woman we call them transvestites.
Is it because maleness and male attributes are more valued even in a woman than are femininity and feminine attributes.

I thought this was a WTF question but you bring up some interesting ideas in your additional details. Although I still don't understand what Xtian women has to do with it. I used to go to the women's basketball games at the large university in my home town. The crowd was packed with women who were dressed like men and adopted nale mannerism and the question came to me then that these women were in fact transvestites but we didn't call them that.

But yea male attributes are considered more desirable. A man dressing like a woman draws scorn because why would a man want to be a "lowly" woman.

Well, you do strike on a good point. My understanding of the definition of transvestism is to dress like the opposite gender. If that is the definition, then a woman who dresses like a man is as much a transvestite as a man who dresses as a woman. However, like some of the previous answers said, society still considers a man to be better than a woman, so a woman trying to be a man is not as strange as the vice verse. It's not right, but it is often the perception.
