It's caused by the herpes simplex virus which is quite easily caught from others through physical contact.
Eating red meat is not going to cause the sores to appear - stress, being run down, tired, your immune system being weakened (I had a sore come up after partying for a whole weekend and having hardly any sleep) is what causes them to appear in my case.
I make sure to have a tube of cold sore cream (Zivorax is a well known brand, but there are others just as good) from the chemist always in the bathroom cabinet. Treat the oncoming sore as soon as you feel the tingly sensation and you'll stop it coming on so bad and it'll go away more quickly.

The herpes simplex virus-1 causes cold sores. There is no cure. The virus lays dormant in the base of the spinal cord and flares up at the end of the same nerve during each outbreak. Stress is the primary reason for an outbreak. I do not believe what the Chinese herbalist told you will work. Your brother should visit his doctor. He will be able to get a prescription to help suppress the outbreak.

Hope that helps.

The Herpes Simplex virus causes them and unfortunately once you get them, you're doomed to getting them the rest of your life. This is because the virus lies dormant, and when you're subjected to stress, for example, you get presented with a cold sore. Most people receive warning signs like a tingle where the cold sore would appear, and they then know to use a cream with Aciclovir in it. Something like Zovirax, or a chemist's own brand.
I've never heard that avoiding red meat works, but might be worth a try.

Here is some information on cold sores check the url in sources to find find out more about cold sores.
""Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus I. They first appear 3 - 10 days after exposure and can last up to three weeks. The virus then remains in the body forever and repeated outbreaks are triggered by several factors""
""These factors include: a fever or cold, exposure to the sun, stress, severe fatigue, or suppression of the immune system. These blisters are very contagious. You can even spread them to yourself. Be careful when washing your face when you have an outbreak. Never use the towel you dried your face with on another part of your body. ""

The herpes virus, acyclovir is the drug of choice for minimzing outbreaks/length of outbreaks. Overexposure to sun, stress, trauma to the lip/nose area and yes, colds and flus all can be contributing factors to an outbreak. I don't think there is any truth to the red meat myth.

that's brought about through a herpes virus. There are a number of diverse viruses in that kinfolk of viruses, and by no skill all of them are completely STDs. and they are spread through a form of fomites. that's why we inspire washing palms often and by no skill sharing ingesting vessels, even for soda or ordinary water, and punctiliously disinfecting all nutrients education surfaces. did you do not forget that a newborn blowing out birthday candles on his or her birthday cake can spread chilly sores because even as they attempt this they're spitting throughout their cake? Kinda makes that a stupid custom, eh?

It is a virus. Once you havethe virus that's it you keep getting coldsores for life. The best way of preventing them is to keep your body in good order, get enough fresh fruit and veg (for vitamins) and to get enough sleep. The virus usually attacks when you are ill, tired or run-down so living a healthy lifestyle reduces how often you suffer from them.
Also Zovirax makes them heal much quicker.

it is herpes. people often contract it when they are young and it will stay with you for the rest of your life, it sits dormant until you are run down, when you are run down your body cannot fight off the herpes and thus you have an out break . so a good healthy lifestyle will keep the pest at bay.
