Nan often has cumin seeds, which have a strong taste, but they are quite big (1-2mm long) and more dark green than black, although they could have been crushed; if they are very small and black they could be poppy seeds, although I don't associate these with a particular flavour. Hmm... Perhaps try eating a cumin seed (I'm sure you local spice shop will oblige if you don't have any), to see if it has the same flavour? The only other small black spice seeds I can think of are mustard (not strongly flavoured) and black cardomom (strongly flavoured - you could sniff the jar in the spice shop to see if it's this). Good luck tracking them down!

they are nigella seeds. They taste great, and are common throughout the middle east and the subcontinent. I make my own flat bread and always throw a few nigella seeds on them when they cook.

They are kolonji seeds otherwise known as nigella seeds (yes, really!) and can also be called black onion seeds. I know this because it is in my Nigella Bites cookbook. You can buy them in Tesco.
