Our 19 week old puppy is toilet trained through the day, but every morning he has left warm, soft, brown stools for me to step on! He was in the kitchen at night (for cleaning up purposes) and semed to be toilet trained, so he was allowed in the lounge room as well. The problem started about 2 weeks ago and no matter how early or late I get up, I am always too late! Please help me and our carpet! Thankyou :)

I had the same problem...my vet suggested to put him in a kennel at night, dogs will not "go" where they sleep...it worked GR8! He really loves his kennel...he lays in it during the day, like his own little cave.

The problem is that your puppy really isn't toilet trained. Most puppies cannot hold urine or feces for more than 4 hours. Even in a crate. Yes, dogs do not like to go where they sleep, but there comes a point where they cannot hold it anymore. The best thing to do, is make sure that you take your puppy out as often as possible. After they eat, play, sleep, pretty much anything. Feed your dog well before bedtime, and take it out right away. Then again before bedtime. Wait for them to go. Sometimes they go in 5 seconds, sometimes 10 minutes. Do not give them food or water before bedtime. The most important thing to remember, though, is set a schedule. Dogs need a schedule. They thrive on it. Take your dog out at the same time every day. Feed it at the same time. Lastly, do not punish your dog if it goes in the house. They are not doing it to anger you. Punishing your dog is going to make it scared and they will become nervous urinators. They do it either because they are not trained or cannot hold it. Just clean up the mess a.s.a.p. and ignore them while you do it. Do not stop ignoring them until they do something to deserve your affection.

During the day, there is usually more attention paid to the dog, & either you are letting him out more often, or he is distracted from pooping.
At night, dogs sleep through, but they have had a full day of eating behind them, & there may be leftover meals working their way through his system.
And because he is alone in a large space, he is not going to try to 'hold it', knowing he can go over there & sleep over here.

My recommendation is to take a step back & retrict his sleeping area to a crate, or section off part of the kitchen into a small space so that if he goes, he is stuck with it.
This should encourage him to wait for you before relieving himself during the night.

With puppies, it is very comon to make great progress & then for no apparent reason, regress a few steps before moving forward again. Dont be afraid to go back along the way as a reinforcement towards good behavior, you will have a happier, more well behaved puppy for it.

You'll have to spend a couple of days with the dog 24 hours a day. Watch where he goes and just before he's able to lift his leg, take him out. After he goes outside, positive reinforcement.

Think what the puppy ate and when, the evening before. How and how many times do you late him out, and for how long? After you answer these questions- draw yr own conclusions. Maybe get up earlier and take the dog out.

even though he is done by the time you get up still take him out -- he needs the walk times regimented and drilled into his head. when you got to go you got to go but if you know you just have to wait a little longer than its a lot more bearable. crating would help too.

The dog is crapping all over your floor, eh? Ahhh yes...just one of the many reasons dogs suck. Get rid of the thing and buy a cat. They crap in a neat little sandbox for you; Very low maintenance.

when you wake up you should quickly put on a robe and take the dog out first thing, don't expect him to hold it while you get dressed, later he will learn to wait on you

don't feed him right before you go to bed. feed him in the afternoon sometime so he can go before you go to sleep. also, if that doesn't work then make him sniff it and spank him. then take him outside.
