Yes, by "demotivates" I mean the things that make people stop volunteering. I thought the word existed in English (sorry, it's not my mother tongue)...

I'm thinking by demotivates you mean causes them to not feel motivated. Lack of recognition is the greatest cause for people to leave a volunteer position. A feeling of not accomplishing anything is another big one. Some leave due to pressures from other areas of their lives. Such as their real jobs, their family or other responsabilities. But, if you want to keep a volunteer happy and productive, make sure that you show them appreciation and give them valid tasks to do - whatever it is that you need done - make sure they feel it plays an important role. Also, treat them as you would an employee in some ways. Let them know they are a part of the team. Hope that helps. Peace

I think one of major reasons people stop volunteering is because the organization makes it difficult. Some organizations require that you fill out time cards, do reports, or all you are given are the nasty jobs (like cleaning the animal pens at the Humane Society). People want to interact with the ones they are helping, they want a little appreciation, a little acknowledgement and they want someone to say thank you. They don't mind doing the crappy jobs if they get to do the good stuff too.

I think you have to get something out of volunteering. Not something selfish, but more like a joy of helping others, feeling like you are making a difference to someone's life, support, respect, and/or appreciation.

If you don't get any of these things, it's only the best of people that can keep it up.

I would think lack of support from those coordinating the volunteering and also lack of resources for them to do what needs to be done.

Demotivates is a proper word, you haven't made it up.

Being treated differently from staff, and patronised.

You mean makes them stop? Lack of appreciation probably, and shortage of time.

Perhaps lack of autonomy, or, some control and opportunity to be creative.
