Pray for what? That I don't die. Or pray for some other reason? Consider this, that prayer is religion salesmanship. If there really was a man living in a cloud do you think that he would say, "Let's see, this person was the worst person in the world so I'll fix his ---. Oh wait a minute the person just said a few prayers so never mind that changes everything". There is no proof that prayer changes anything, No proof, It's purely religion salesmanship. Religions sell hope for $3 billion a year in tax free donations. Good and bad things happen to prayers and non-prayers alike. It makes no difference. The people who pray don't live longer, healthier lives, they don't get the better jobs, the don't win the State Lottery any more often that the non-prayers. The religions sell hope. That's why there are so many more houses of worship in poor neighborhoods than in wealthy ones. Many Muslims pray 5 times a day and from the 2004 Tsunami most of the 300,000 victims were the frequent prayers. It makes no difference.

I'm not an atheist, I'm an agnostic and I would not pray. I never prayed being raised as a christian and I've never prayed after walking away from christianity. I don't believe prayer to be helpful. If I had 24 hours to live I'm sure I'd have much better things to do like spend time with the people I love rather than pray to a deity whom may or may not even exist.

If _you_ knew that _your_ life was ending soon, would you try snorting cocaine and shooting heroin just to see what it's like because you wouldn't have to worry about addiction?

I've lived my whole life seeking facts, not "truth", and dealing with reality. Why would I or any other atheist start believing a lie just because we're dying? And that's aside from the fact that there is no "god" nor any evidence for one.

In case you're uninformed, Charles Darwin DID NOT pervert - oops, convert - to christianity on his deathbed. Henrietta Darwin, his daughter, was there while the lying christian Lady Whore, - oops, Lady Hope - who claims he converted, never visited him.

Like many things christians say about atheists, it was a baldfaced lie.

No, not in an actual 'down on knees', help-me-Jesus sort of way. But I do think I'd be going 'Oh please, oh please' in my head (particularly in a violent death I could see coming, like a car accident), as an appeal to no deity in particular, maybe to fate, maybe just as a saying. If I were dying like that, it wouldn't be an 'in case', like I'd actually thought it out and weighed my atheism versus the hope of being saved- it'd just happen naturally. If it was a slow death, like I had two days to live before my heart gave out or something, I might try to strike a deal with God, but I wouldn't really believe it, you know? I wouldn't put any hope or faith in it, I guess.

Interesting question, though- the last South Park episode was about a society of atheists, who, in a crisis, ran around screaming "For science's sake . . ." and "Oh my Science", effectively replacing God with just another thing. Pretty cute.

No. Praying at the end of my life, after a lifetime of no prayer, would turn me into a terrible hypocrite. BTW, when I was in real danger of dying, (and I was) I didn't pray, so I think I know what I'm talking about...

No but I might remember to meditate as I sometimes do now !
why on earth would any one ask such a question of an Atheist?
and if I did choose to pray it would be a godless prayer!

Why would I do that?

Even if the Christian God existed, I'd still oppose him. I would still oppose all the violence, homophobia, and ridiculous rules in the Bible. I have said time and time again that, if Christianity turns out to be true, I'll gladly take my seat in the underworld. I'm never going to all of a sudden change my beliefs and pray for eternal life with a god whose message I don't even agree with.

No, people clutch at straws (such as praying) when they fear the unknown. If christians were genuinely confident that they go to some type of heaven, they wouldn't have this fear, but when it comes down to reality, christians are like everyone, deep down they don't know what comes after death. They are afraid and so they clutch at straws in the hope their life will continue in an other form... in some kind of paradise preferably.

To me you die and that's it. There is no fear in this, being dead would feel much the same way you felt before you were conceived..... nothing at all.

So there is nothing to fear as you will not be conscious of it. It would be natural to feel deep sadness before death though as
(most) people would like to enjoy life a little longer hence my motto.............CARPE DIEM !

No. I don't believe that anyone would hear my prayer so it would be pointless.

Ask yourself this question: arguably, the Hindus might be right, right? Hell, there's almost a billion of them. THey must know something, right? So having said that, if you knew your life was ending, would you pray to Krishna? You know, just in case...

Your answer to that question is the same as my answer to your question.

No.

I'd panic (death scares me) but I wouldn't pray.

In fact I HAVE been close to death. I was hospitalized over a year ago with a blood pressure so high that they thought I was going to have a fatal seizure. I didn't pray once.
