New guidelines for adolescents and adults are 1,000-1,300mg per day depending on age and gender about 300mg per day higher than the old values.

Generally, 500mg -1000mg per day when you are 25 is fine. As you get older, you will want to increase that to 1000mg -1500mg due to the fact that women lose bone density as they age, causing a variety of problems including brittle bones. But the important thing to remember when taking calcium is that your body can only absorb 500mg at a time. So if you take 1000mg a day, split it up to two different times. Same with three doses. If you take it all at once, you will be flushing it down the toilet as it takes so long for your body to absorb the calcium that anything over 500mg in one sitting is passed through your system and out. But I would also suggest you speak to your doctor and see what they recommend before starting any new vitamin program. Good luck and good health.

Calcium with vitamin D, 1500mg. daily in three divided doses. Your body will only absorb around 500mg at a time, so be sure it's in divided doses.
