When my dog greets me, she sits in front of me and puts out a paw like she wants to "shake hands". She always does this and seems almost insistant on me holding her paw before she stops doing it. why?

That just happens to be her greeting style, and if I were you, I'd encourage it! I had a male that did this same thing (his sire did it too), and I would tell him "give me five" when he did it until he had the command associated with the paw shaking, a cute trick people enjoyed seeing him do. In obedience training, one of the hardest
fine points in the novice level, to get a dog to do just right (to avoid losing points when you're trying to get a high score) , is to come when called and sit straight in front of you.

Most people have the problem of a dog that wants to greet them by jumping all over them! Youre lucky to have a dog that already has learned the sit in front part of the "come when called" basic obedience recall exercise! (now she needs to learn all the rest!)

Haha! My dog does the same exact thing!!!! He's a two yr. old Golden Retriver and everytime I come home he puts his right paw in my hand. I think it's a dog's way of trying to be more like us:) A dog is like a 3 yr. old child absorbing everything around them. If they are smart enough they mimic what they see. They're are 2 dog sign languages I learned, first one is the play bow. U know, when they bow in front of you with their *** in the air wagging their tail. It means they want to play. Second, is the paw thing (it's just a greeting) but if you are already petting them and they put their paw in your hand it means they want you to keep petting them:)

She loves you. She thinks you like her doing this. My dog wants to picked up as soon as I come home. Feel lucky you get to shake paws.

My dog does weird stuff too. She lays down and crawls to me, licking her tongue and wagging her tail. I guess it's yr dog's way to saying hello.

Just her way of greeting you and having you touch her.
