I was raised Catholic and left the religion when I got older.
Here are the reasons why:
1) They pray to Mary. This is not what the Holy Bible tells us to do. Mary was the mother of our Saviour, Jesus, and we should know this and honor it, but she is not to be prayed to. Right now she is just another person like we are, only dead. Catholics also are told to pray to St. Peter and and some of the others in the Bible. The only one we are to pray to is God, as it says in the Ten Commandments.
2) They use beads and such to pray. We don't need those beads or any other graven immage.
3) They expect us to go through a priest to tell our sins and expect that priest to pray for us. God wants us to repent or sins to Him on our own, not through a third party. We need to ask for the forgiveness all on our own, as this is a very emotional experience.
4) Catholics baptize infants and children when they don't even know what it is they are getting baptised for. Baptism is for when we are ready to be saved and born again and have excepted Jesus as our saviour, and old enough to understand.
5) The prayers the Catholics say are the same ones all the time. Anyone can rattle off a couple of memorized prayers in a few minutes. God wants prayers to come from us and to say whatever is is we need to tell Him or ask, not something that is written in books that He has heard a milloin times over and over.
6) In history, Catholics are known to have killed many for their baptism beliefs. They killed the Hutterites for this reason. You can find this information on www.hutterites.com

These are the reasons I left the religion. I became a Christian. I don't put down Catholics, as they are on the right track as far as when it comes to God and teaching, just that they have some beliefs that I did not agree with. I hope this helps.

Catholicism and Christianity aren't the identical faith. Most persons generally tend to believe and say that they're the identical.Catholicism isn't the department of Christianity. It is one other faith. There are Christians,Roman Catholics, Independents, protestants, Orthodox and Anglicans. These are the 6 leader/main 'religions' that worship the Christian God or Jesus Christ or each.I have no idea so much approximately different religions I best recognize approximately Catholicism. So it is not convenient to factor out the truly variations.

There are a number of wide variances between the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and any or all other Christian [Protestant] denominations that goes all the way back to the days of the Great Reformation around the 15th-16th centuries.

If you want take this matter seriously, by all means you owe it to yourself to do some reading and research about it. Also, do so first by asking your own pastor, then by asking a Catholic priest, as well as other religious scholars--rather than relying on answers from people in this forum. More than likely, one of you [or your BF] will have to convert to the other person's religious faith.

It becomes even more important to know the differences in rituals and traditions BEFORE you and your BF contemplate on getting more serious in your relationship, as in thinking of eventually getting married and having a family with kids. I say this latter part because you will have to address the issue on rearing your children...

Peace be with you.

Catholics ARE Christians. Catholicism is the "first" major Christian religion. And there were no other Christian sects until 1517 when Martin Luther, a Catholic priest, criticized the Catholic Church and set into motion the Protestant Reformation. This led (eventually) to all of the Christian sects we see today...Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, etc. Either way, Catholics and all Christian sects ARE Christian because they believe Christ is the Savior.
And don't listen to Norm S. he obviously has something against Catholics, what he says is not true. (BTW, I'm not Catholic, just know history and religion).

a Christian is some one who believes that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and saved us from our sins

so a Catholic is a Christian but its a specific denomination of Christianity with its own traditions and additional beliefs

so at the core they're the same but Catholics also do things such as pray to the saints, have a formal mass, are led by the pope, and a Catholic bible is slightly different than a Christian bible

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

With love in Christ.

Well, Catholics and Christians are quite the same in some levels. Unlike Christians Catholics give too much importance to Mary. They give her soooo many names. They say that they don’t worship her, nut they actually do. They pray to her which I believe is a form of worshipping her. Catholics believe too much in saints and they actually make statues of them and worship or pray to them which is wrong. Christians on the other hand Respect Mary but do Not worship her and they also respect the saints but they do not pray to them or ask for guidance from them because Mary and the other Saints are just human so Christians Only Pray to God because he is truly our Savior and divine healer. Catholics also believe in the rosary which is a false teaching or practice because nowhere in the bible can you find it that we must use the rosary. Christians believe that the rosary is not needed because people should Directly only pray to God. I believe that Christians have different sections or are divided into parts---like evangelical Christians, Anglicans, protestants, nut all of them have only one main objective which I to know the lord, his teachings and his commands and to further worship and honor God. I hope this info. Helps! Take care! God Bless!

A true Christian has been born-again and believes Christ is the Savior. Some Catholics are just ritualistic Catholics that believe more in good works and being baptized as a baby to guarantee righteousness. I know this is definitely not the case with many Catholics, but of the hundreds I have encountered, they are unsure about their entrance into heaven. A true Christian doesn't have to worry.

Cathlics are Christians. Catholicism iis the first sect of Christianity. Then the Orthodox split form them. After that, much later, Protestants, you, came about and broke form Catholicism. Your both Christians, just he recognizes the Catholic Church and the Pope while you don't. Simple.

Catholicism is the supposed result of the efforts of st peter, christ's lead apostle, to establish the religion based on the teachings of jesus christ....the catholic pope is the inheritor of st peter's leadership in the faith...christianity encompasses all the faiths that believe that jesus christ is the son of god including those that refuse to follow the strict catholic view especially in terms of papal supremacy
