You would lose your Internet Explorer's memory if you erased Internet Explorer 5 before installing Internet Explorer 7.

First check your system requirements for Internet Explorer 7 (link is at source).

When downloading Internet Explorer 7, be cautious for any problems to your Windows system. People recently have problems that their DLL files got erased. Be backed up for any damage.

You could, if you want, download the Mozilla Firefox. It comes really handy at times.

If you want my advice, stick to your current version of Internet Explorer or use Firefox.

i'd go the Firefox route also (www.getfirefox.com)
All the features of IE7 are present in Firefox, and its not a microsoft product!
Firefox will import all of your IE settings automatically, so you won't lose anything.
IE7 will override your current IE install, and once installed there's no going back. Eventually it will be required though as developers write code designed for IE7, so you might as well download it anyways.
But use Firefox, it is OK to use an alternative browser contrary to what Micro(Big Brother)Soft wants you to think.

why not try the open source mozilla firefox? at our store, we call IE internet exploder. blake ross of netscape fame is amoung the heavyweights who developed firefox. as far as deleting IE, the nerdies who frequent our store say that since IE is in the "core" of xp, it shouldnt and cant be deleted without causing massive cr*p.

install the new one, and it will automatically overwrite the older version.
if you remove old IE you will lose, your bookmarks//favourites and all.
