Including monostaurated fats in your diet will increase your HDL, lower your LDL and lower triglycerides. Some sources of monosaturated fats are olive and other vegetable oils, nuts (if you're non-allergic to them) and avocados. The American Heart Association says you should get less than 30% of your daily calories from fat and oils, and these should be monosaturated.

Research has shown that omega 3 fatty acids decrease the risk of arrhythmias, decrease triglycerides, decrease the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque and slightly lower blood pressure but have no effect on HDL.

Exercise has been associated with increased concentrations of HDL-C but the amount of exercise needed has not been established. Research in this specific area suggests that an exercise threshold must be met before any significant changes in HDL-C occur.

A collegue of mine who had a heart attack said he has been taking Omega 3 capsules to help balance his ratio of good/bad cholesterol. I've gotten my husband to take them. . . he's in a similar situation. We haven't been back to the doctor yet, but between that and a healthy diet I'm sure he's made some improvement.
