that clicking is probably the solenoid (part of the starter) trying to engage the starter motor, either the solenoid is bad or the battery is dead or your have a weak connection, check the battery terminals first. Then check the fuses/ breakers/ fusible links. good luck. get a manual, it should have a nice troubleshooting guide.

I perused the other answers that were listed, but I would have to say (and I've had a little experience with this), you have one of either two problems, bad starter, or bad cylinaoid (I'm sorry I spelled it phonetically), but both are related to your starter.
If you can jump the car off with another one, I would look at the battery itself first, then your connections on the hot and neutral sides.
If that doesn't work either - see if you can get it to Auto Zone and let them bring their tester out for your alternator. If you're battery tests good, and you can jump the car off, that might be something to look at. Your alternator is to keep your battery charged AFTER you get your car started...
Not just a Jetta answer, just over all knowledge of automotive problems, I've suffered a bevy of them myself.

it is amazing how many people will condem a solonoid or starter
becouse of low battery voltage. the starter will use mor voltage than anything your car has electricatly. when any car has low battery voltage the soloniod will try to engage the drive into the flywheel (the big gear, the starter is the small gear) but it dos`nt
have enough voltage to turn the motor over, so the clicking is the solonoid is just trying to push the drive forward. remove the battery and have it checked. if bad replace it if good have your charging system checked

Take it one step at a time and loosen up somewhat. automobiles are machines and subsequently will respond to a methodical problem capturing frame of mind. a million. cost/verify the battery. 2. guarantee that each and each and every one electric powered connections are sparkling and dry. 3. attempt to commence the motorized vehicle. If it begins, then replace the air sensor/coolant temp sensor it really is making your automobile run in a lean situation it really is why you're having this kind of undesirable time starting up it. If it does not, then get an issue code examining and restoration what ever the code tells you to. next time a relative tells you something that the motorized vehicle became designed to operate with is unimportant, ignore them and get the priority fixed.

Bad starter, possibly a bad connection on the battery posts. Try tightning the battery terminals (make sure they are clean of deposits), if that doesn't help then try tapping on the starter to get it started. Keep in mind the tapping on the starter is only a temporary fix and will eventually stop working. I would suggest you have a friend or relative take a look at it! Good luck!

Dead Battery!! Its amazing how weird a VW will act on just a low volt batt. Install a new batt. if you end up with this again... Its the alternator not charging the batt. as you drive. Cold weather will always bring out the electrical problems with cars!

Its either a dead battery, low battery or lose connection with the battery. I have had that happen before. In all cases, it was one of those 3 things. Other than that you can check the starter but is sounds like an electrical issue.

I'd say your ignition... but it's definitely some type of electrical/computer problem. Is it fairly new? If it is, it's definitely under warrany... just bring in to VW and they'll put it on the diagnostics equipment, and tell you exactly what the problem is.

The starter is out or a wire is loose. Look around under the hood for a loose wire - should be somewhere on the driver's side near the firewall. If you don't find a loose wire, it's the starter.
