He started out 2 days ago vomiting only 1 time. It was clear with very small amount of something like milk. Didn't eat that day. Next day he vomited, this time it was yellow with streaks of blood in it. He has been lightly caughing with a gag at the next of his caughing spell. He has been losing a lot of weight the past month. He has been shaking like he is scared to death, but nothing to be scared of. I smelled his mouth and it smells so bad it almost made me vomit. Took him to the doctor, the doc said his is fine, did blood workup and x-rays. 500 dollars later, doc said he is fine. YEAH RIGHT. I think he is dying a painful death. I believe he has cancer or something fatal, I HOPE NOT. I forgot to say he has very little energy. He is 13 years old and is a lab mix. Great dog, but he is real sick.

If anyone can help, I really appreciate! We want to keep him for as long as we can, but we don't want him to suffer.

Sincerely,
David S.

As Pirate Girl said, larger dogs don't live as long as smaller ones so he may be at the end of his life. However, I would still take him to a different vet and ask about it. Be sure to mention his age and ask if that is a factor.
He definitely sounds very ill and may have liver or kidney failure. Don't take "He's OK." as a answer because he's obviously not. Tell the vet in advance about your experience with the other vet and that you know the dog is extremely ill. Tell him you want the truth because the dog is suffering and you want what's best for him.
I hope everything goes well for you and I'm really sorry to hear that your dog is so ill.

David I am sorry to hear your about your dog .. when is the last time he was wormed ?
( could it be heart worms ? )

When you were smelling his mouth did you notice any bad teeth ? festering etc ??
I agree with the others that another vet needs to be called and really it is sad that the one you trusted failed in helping him ..

It sounds like he has a high acid content in his tummy and most likely empty...
Boil up some chicken ( de bone it ) try giving him some small chunks of it along with the broth .. you might have to be stern with him to eat ....but not rough .remember he is sick ..
Contact your local feed store ( maybe they might have an idea and ask for a puppy milk ..or even grab a can of ensure from the drugstore ... dilute it for him to drink .. he needs fluids that's for sure ... IF he wont eat you might want to run that chicken through the blender ... make it soupy ..
all the best

my Golden was 10 and doing that with blood in his stool also, and he had cancer. I would say take the dog to a different doctor and get a second opinion, i know its expensive, but if you want to keep the dog its gonna cost-especially when they're sick. to get my dog healthy it cost over 7,000 total and is still costing me because of his meds and special food. but it was worth it because hes 100% better and has the energy of a 5yr old dog. I love it. If your not willing to spend the money needed to cure something like this, you almost always have to put the dog down because they ARE suffereing. WHEN A DOG DOESNT EAT, IT'S IN PAIN. that's how you tell. Good luck with the dog and the decision making.

My lab mix lived about 14 years. Sometimes dogs get coughing spells as they get old and their heart doesn't pump as it should. If the doctor says there is nothing wrong, meaning other than old age I would suggest putting a T-shirt on him. My dog just got cold like an old man or women does when they are very old. Secondly, try feeding him a special treat diet... such as a real hamburger, or some lunch meat...I bet that will perk him up.
Good luck, and enjoy him in his old "man" doggihood!

There are tons of conditions that cause the symptoms you are describing. Are you close to a University animal clinic?
Take your dog there, ditch your current vet. There are tests and biopsies and things that help with a diagnosis that your vet didn't look into. How can he say the dog is fine???

He may have an ulcer or something related, please get him to a better clinic!

Dave, I trained labs for about 7 years and this is new to me...and you. I would immediately take your dog to another vet. He sounds miserable and in pain. Good Luck

Thirteen-wow...that's usually about how long labs live...I would say that unfortunately, the best thing for him would be to put him down.

He can't have a dangerous disease like parvo, he would have died by now. Get a new vet!
