I don't know how it really works when men are HIV positive, but I would assume, if you wanted to have a child with this person, you're condemning yourself to a death sentance as well.

In the 80's I had several friends who had HIV, and I've lost touch with many of them over the years, however I know that one very close friend and her boyfriend were both HIV positive (because he was a 'hustler' on the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans) and she didn't find out until she was pregnant, however, their child was born HIV free. I remember her asking me once, several years later, she wanted to have another child with another man (her boyfriend later died due to AIDS), and I advised her against it because she was signing HIS death warrant too, and perhaps the child as well. Sadly, this was one of the last times I spoke to her, so I cannot tell you how that ended.

I wouldn't do it if I were you...but then I'd rather like to live to see my kiddos grow up and have children of their own.

The correct answer is "yes" they can (and do) have healthy children.

A fetus (your baby from 8 weeks gestation until birth) or newborn can become infected with HIV through contact with virus in their mother’s blood, cervical and vaginal secretions, and breast milk. It’s the mom’s HIV status that matters, not the father’s—HIV transmission to babies is all about the virus in their mom’s fluids, not in their father’s semen. *IF* the mom stays HIV negative throughout her pregnancy, there’s no risk to the baby even if the father is HIV positive. If the mother is HIV positive there are steps to be taken to help with the delivery of a healthy child (see link below).

Of course, those are just the the biological/medical facts. There are other issues to consider when a potential parent is HIV positive.......and they are significant.

Hope this helps. As with any pregnancy, it is important to talk to your doctor about any concerns and get informed, direct answers. This is not really the forum to debate such concerns, in my opinion, and there is a lot of fear and misinformation. (see answers 1-5 above).

I understand wanting to have a child, but would that person really want to risk not only their life but a helpless child's too?Yes they can have children, but the risks are too high that the child will be born with HIV.

Anyone with HIV shouldnt have children. Its irresponsible to take a chance with a human life like that and risk haveing a baby born with a disease because of it. You made yur bed , now lie in it and dont repoduce.

It is the mother's status that matters, not the father's. I can't believe how much misinformation there is out there (and in some of these answers).

Well he would be giving a death sentence to both the child and the mother, now wouldn't he? Is it worth it? I would suggest he buys a Family Plot before he checks out...permanently.
