Hey bro
I had a simular prob when i was in high school, these guys always would pick on me, till one day i found brazilian jui jitsu and mauy thai, after i subed these guys one by one they left me alone, learn BJJ, get on the wrestling team, get in the weight room and get fit, BJJ helps with condidence 100%, it puts your mind at ease knowing that when you are at a party, bar or what ever that one one there puts as much sweat and blood into training them selfs so you know you could work alot of those people and its not hard cause everyday at BJJ practice you roll with guys who are trained and you hold your own against them, so them fighting becomes not a big deal and you brush these little encounters off that you have with drunk idiots of bullies, but if you must, learn to fight onthe ground, watch the early UFC, no body could beat royce gracie because they don't know who to fight on the ground, that goes for society today= these retards don't know how to fight, so learn to fight where almost 100% of the people in the world don't even know how to fight there, anyone can hit or beat you up on your feet, standing there, you hit them they hit you, or you could take them down, get postioin and choke them out of sub them in any way you want weather you need to really hurt them or make them look like a tool.
Brazilian jui jitsu is by far the most effective art

I think there is plenty of people who turn towards martial arts just for this reason. Typically these people are bullied as younger adults then turn towards martial arts later in life. You usually end up seeing this type of a person pushing their children later in life to be a "tough kid". They usually end up being some low level football coach so they can live vicariously thru their kid because they were too wimpy themselves. Don't make this mistake. YOU ALREADY SAID THAT YOU ARE BIG ENOUGH TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. YOU SHOULD NEVER LET A SITUATION ESCALATE TO THE POINT OF VIOLENCE! Taking martial arts for the sole purpose of fighting someone is wrong. I think you would be better off taking a self confidence course and learning how to deal with your problems thru talking. If these same kids know you are taking martial arts they will surely want to fight you even more just to test if the classes work. Go out and be a kid.Have fun!

There are many good arts available. What is most important is to find a good instructor. I'm a little biased towards Tae Kwon Do, since I am a TKD instructor, but I'm not blind the the quality of other arts. It is generally best to chose an art ending in Do rather then Jitsu. See my answers to other questions on this subject for an explanation of why.

Aikido is known as the "Art of Peace." Its techniques are different from other disciplines, but it is quite difficult and you will not master before you finish school. But then there are no quick martial arts. Tae kwon do features many blocks and you can learn to use it effectively in a few months. But again, martial arts are not the quick or easy answer.
Also look into Hapkido. It centers around self-defense, joint locks, pressure points, and leverage. Many of its disciplines center around using an opponents off-balanced and poorly executed attacks back against them. Most bullies punches are awkward and unbalanced as they believe that if they hit you hard enough you will just crumple. Using simple side-steps and grapples, you can turn these clumsy punches into falls and take-downs. The bigger the attacker, the more energy they use, giving you more of their energy to use against them.
Judo/Yudo are also related to Hapkido.

Have you talked to a teacher, your parents? It's not a sign of weakness to get them to stop. Bullies just pick on you because their self esteem is so bad that putting you down makes them feel better. You deserve to go to school and not have to worry about this. The more you act like it's bothering you, the more they will pick on you. Some snappy comebacks sometimes help. Another way would be to get ahold of the bullies INDIVIDUALLY and ask them why they are being so ridiculous- just be honest. Or try to just laugh at them and say "You're silly!" Living well is the best revenge. I hope it gets better for you soon.

If you can beat them up easily but dont wanna get in trouble, I recommend punching them in the guts, striking with your fingers in the neck and grabbing the head and kneeing in the stomach and/or balls.
Just attack to areas that dont leave visible marks (not face etc)
I know it sounds extreme but theres no such thing as a fair fight, the bullies will stop annoying you and martial arts will take far too long to learn especially if you only want it for this situation

Kris is right. Most martial arts school doesn't teach a thing. If you want to learn to itsbe able to defend yourself, learn boxing, muay Thai, judo, or jiu jitsu. Or even get on school wrestling team.

I recommend you take up boxing if you really wanna learn how to defend yourself. I'm 16 and I've been boxing for about 3 years now. You won't get anywhere by taking some strip-mall karate class. If you wanna learn how to fight, boxing is your best bet.
