My husband believes it is OK to reheat a leftover food several times. He also saves the couple of ounces of milk that remains in my baby's bottle for the next feeding! He thinks reheating that milk is OK too! Why is he right or wrong?

He is putting everyone at risk of food poisioning. Reheating food more then once is not good. You lose the nutrients in the food and some bacteria are not easily killed while others developed during the reheating especially when reheating it at a wrong temperature. The food would taste awful when reheated several times, it'll be overcooked!

Left over milk, especially milk that contian traces of saliva should be thrown out immidiately. If your husband finds it a waste then he can finish baby's milk. Baby's are vulnerable to food poisioning. Why take the risk of dealing with a sick baby?

If food is handled properly, it should be OK to reheat 2 or 3 times. This would mean getting it back into the refrigerator promptly each time. I would think it would suffer a bit with each reheating, getting dry and stale, but it should be safe. It would be better to only take out and reheat what you planned on eating, but that might not be possible in all cases.

I wouldn't try to save and re-warm a couple of ounces of baby formula. As the baby drinks, air goes into the bottle. This air has all kinds of stuff in it. Pollutants, germs, etc. The formula would be too good a breeding ground for this type of stuff and babies often take their time in feeding. This gives germs the opportunity to grow. A baby might not have the ability to fight off some of the germs that could get into and multiply in the formula. The small amount of money saved would be a very poor return on the risk to your babies health and well being. I wouldn't do it.

So much depends on the contents of the foods you are reheating. Meat? Cheese? Eggs? Mayonaisse? How much bacteria has grown in the food since the last reheating? That is the question one must ask because everytime food reaches room temperature (or below) micro organisms (bacteria) start to grow exponentially. It is often the exposion of bacterial growth that causes sickness.

With your baby? I would not take any chances. There are so many other environmental things that could harm your baby...why not give it a fighting chance by controlling what you can. Adn that would be the safety of the food in your home.

Reheating left over food is one thing. Reheating your baby's milk is another. I used to work at a popular daycare center for 5 yrs. I was in the nursery and we could only re-heat the bottles once if it was breast milk, twice if it was formula/cows milk. I wouldn't re-heat over and over.

He is wrong. The bacteria in food after it is heated and cooled and reheated again starts to grow.In the baby bottles may be used in couple of hours becomes like water and becomes yellowish or then it will curdled.Be careful it is a wonder you haven't got food poisoning yet.Hope it never happens.Good luck.

Baby bottles should never be given a bottle that has been out more than 2 hours due to bacteria. Would you drink milk that has set out for more than an hour?
