If they said you can only use a sabot slug, it is probably a rifled barrel, in which case you cannot used buckshot, as the wadding around the buckshot will be spinning when it leaves the barrel, and, just like when you put a ball in a bowl and spin it around, the shot will sling out all over the place, except the direction you want it to go. Unload the gun and remove the barrel. Look down the barrel...if it is smooth and shiny, it is a smoothbore, and you can shoot standard slugs and buckshot through it, but sabots...not so good. If it has ridges spiralling down the lenth of the barrel, it is rifled, and sabot will shoot almost like a centerfire rifle, with outstanding results.

If it is a slug barrell, it is rifled (meaning it has grooves to spin the bullet. If it is fired with lead or steel shot, you will ruin the accuracy of the barrel because it will scar the barrel.
You can buy another barrel for steel or lead shot, unscrew the barrel and replace it with the new one and it will work fine.

A slug is one solid piece of lead like a bullet. Sabot means that the slug is inside a plastic case almost like an egg in a carton. Buckshot is a term for very large lead or steel shot about one third the size of a marble. Standard shot varies in size depending on the game that you are hunting. There is no such thing as a buckshot slug. Ask your dealer what is the best size for the game you are hunting.

If your using it for home protection, it wont get fired (hopefully) very often if ever so you CAN use any type of shot in it you like. It will not blow up or anything like that as long as you have the correct length shell for the gun. (They come in 2 3/4 and 3 inch lengths)

First off you do not have to only shoot saboted slugs in a rifled barrel any slug in that gage will work just maybe not as well. Rifled slugs will work just fine in a rifled barrel. If you look at a rifled slug you find that the rifling on the slug is in the opposite direction as the rifling in the barrel this gives a place for the lead to go when it is displaced by the rifling in the barrel. This is what BRENNEKE has to say about your question. [I added rifled but that is what they are talking about] Link to the answer. http://www.brennekeusasabot

Question: What happens if I shoot your [rifled] slug in a rifled barrel?
Answer: All our slugs can be shot from rifled barrels. No problem at all. Normally you will achieve even higher precision from a rifled barrel than from a smoothbore barrel. Groups of under 4" at 100 yards are no problem from a rifled barrel with our normal slugs.
However, we have two specialists, slugs designed for use in rifled barrels only: Gold Magnum, a 13/8 oz slug and our SuperSabot, a 11/8 oz expanding (up to 1") brass slug. These two products provide maximum accuracy (under 2" groups at 100 yards) from a rifled barrel, at ranges of over 100 yards.
