How do you tell your neighbor?

(politely) when you have a lot of bags and your dog & your handbag, etc. coming back from the store (and you are trying to re-arrange things) that you'll hold the door, but they so insist, (makes me mad) even though you've told them thanks, I got it and they stay there, (we both end up holding it, I guess out of nervousness, not knowing what to do) and end up looking like a jerk, what would you do ?

Perhaps I have to make myself clear, when I'm back from the grocerie store, I have to re-arrange the bags, having my hands full, grabbing the keys to unlock the main lobby door to go up the elevator, they are going to the garage & I'm going inside, so it may take me a long while, I have to put everything down and I feel bad having them wait there forever holding the door while I do that.

Realize that there are True tragedies in the world, and thank your lucky stars for your packages, your dog, your handbag, the $ to use at the store, the fact that you have a roof over your head, a considerate neighbor, and the time and inclination to worry about that rather than starving children and injustices in the world...

Just be gracious, thank them, and walk through the door. All they're doing is being polite.

I'd write a thank you card for their unselfish act of kindness. And thank my lucky stars for such a thoughtful neighbor.
