I've been feeling a bit trapped and empty lately, like being stuck in a box, so I've just decided, tonight, to go on a week-long vacation... My pick is Washington, DC.... for no particular reason though; I have just never been there.

Anyway, if my plan stays, I will be in Washington in 48 hours, but I still have no clue what to do when I get there. I think I will arrive at either Dulles International Airport or Reagan National Airport.

I'm up for anything, but more into performing arts, concert, sightseeing. Could you give me some suggestions? Names of places / cities, etc. THANKS!!!! HUG HUG!!!

I posted this yesterday, but it applies here:

In addition to the several Smithsonian Museums (both on and off the Mall) and in addition to the monuments on the Mall, you should see the main governmental buildings, like the Capitol, the White House, and the Supreme Court. You can tour some of the Departments, too, if you arrange it in advance. I recommend the Pentagon, for instance. You can see where cash is made at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, but their tour isn't very good.

Other must-see places are the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building. It may be the most spectacular building in America. Also, you should see the National Cathedral and its grounds.

The Holocaust Memorial is very moving, though disturbing. The Spy Museum is very fun, though expensive. There's also the National Building Museum, near all the DC Courts and the Police Officers' Memorial. Arlington Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Memorial are interesting and moving, as well. If you come during the warm seasons, you can visit the National Arbortum, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, or Teddy Roosevelt Island.

Outside the city, there's Old Town Alexandria, Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall (of George Mason), the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Annex near Dulles Airport, and Annapolis, Maryland and Baltimore are less than an hour away and definitely worth a visit (The National Aquarium, the Inner Harbor, and Fort McHenry in Baltimore, and the Naval Academy, Statehouse, and harbor in Annapolis).

A non-Smithsonian museum worth seeing is the National Gallery of Art (East and West buildings), which is free. The Corcoran Gallery is also cool, but costs a little.

If you have time, go to the Kennedy Center. There's always a free show each day, and the roof top view is free and lovely.

Walk around Old Town Alexandria, the Golden Triangle, Dupont, Georgetown, and Capitol Hill. There's a lot to see.

Well, I could go on and on. There's never a shortage of things to do in DC.

Smithsonian's always worth a visit, and the Vietnam Memorial was amazing. Try the Holocaust museum and all the memorials--Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, etc. The park across the street from the white house can be a really interesting place to people-watch. Arlington's a must. Ford's Theatre was cool. There's tons to do in DC. It just depends on what you're into.

If I were you i'd go to Mount Vernon it's outside of the city but WAY fun. I love walking around there. I'd also go to the mall and go the the museums(art history air and space etc...) there as well take a tour of the capital look at or go up the elevator in washington monument and look at Lincoln monument, Vietnam, WWII and Korean memorials. i'd then skip on over to the Jefferson monument as well as Iwa Jima FDR, Arlington Cemetary(this you can't miss). A lot of these things are free, so it's a great place for not spending tons of money. I'd also go to the old post office, the holocost museum, ford theater, walk by the white house, the national cathedral, take a cruise on the patomic, and i always like to go to the awakening statue. try to take the subway as much as possible as parking can be tricky, but you can get yoru car parked in some places like mount vernon and the awakening. Good luck and have fun!!!
PS if you want tours you need to go EARLY!
