How many of you would decide to stop breeding if I told you this:
27 Million unwanted pets are turned into shelters each year
12,500 are euthanized each hour
Over 15 million euthanized each year
This doesn't include those who are neglected either!
If you want to see a neglected dog go here: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/pictures.html
Are going to stop being selfish now?

Screenings can help, but they don't predict divorce, death, illness, moving, and so on
Breeding is irresponsible, if you want my opinion-now if they were endangered then yeah I would breed, but we are sooooooooooo far from that!

obviously, just about everyone on here asking questions about their dogs being pregnant is a backyard breeder. Notice that they always mispell "know" and "pregnant", many of them don't even know the symptoms

torbay, I would just like to say that if you work in a shelter you should not be so damn rude about getting the facts out. This is information that my shelter hands out when we take the dogs and cats out to the mall or public outings. Constantly over filled.

I work in a shelter and see unwanted pets ALL DAY LONG. I have euthanized more pets myself than you will EVER know, so do NOT preach to me.
I breed dog because I like a certain breed and want a dog that can do certain things. I have about one litter each year and I know, right now, where EACH AND EVERY PUPPY IS THAT I HAVE PRODUCED. NONE of them are in a shelter anywhere. I will take back any dog I have produced at anytime of the day or night.
I do not sell to idiots, and the health clearances are all done.
Anyone who knows a lot about dogs knows the shelter situation. The people who are the REAL problem is the mills and backyard breeders who do it for the money. If you do not screen owners, there is a far greater chance that they will dump the dog, since many people get one based totally on the wrong things.
Go preach to them. You cannot even BEGIN to tell me something I do not already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, and if there is divorce, loss of job,fire,moving,landslide.....the dog comes back TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the event of the dog getting lost....I am the alternate contact on the microchip that I implanted before the pup was sold.
THOSE are the people that cause the problem. They are breeding crap for cash. They do not care who buys the puppies, they didn't put any effort into the litter,it cost them almost nothing.....they WOULD NEVER take a 5 year old dog back that they sold someone. These are the people you should be preaching to. The sad fact is, they do not care. They see the $$$$$$ and that is it. They paid $400 for their crap pup and see that they too can do the same thing!!!!
I do not see how I am being rude about getting the facts out.
And most of the webpage you posted seems to be about chaining dogs. I am totally against that. I would never place a puppy with anyone who planned on chaining the dog. That is why screening and fenced in yard is a must.

I am hoping that this is not directed at all dog breeders, those that are recognized as reputable breeders that are dedicated to preserving the quality of a breed, not the quantity? Hopefully this was aimed at puppy mills, backyard breeders, and such? The responsibility should also be on those that buy the puppies should research the breed and be prepared to care for it in the way the dog needs to be, not the way a person thinks it should.

I understand your frustration, but some people prefer purebred dogs - the predictability of their personalities, fur length & adult size, etc. I have owned purebreds & mixed breeds and loved them all, but I am a tried & true Boxer fanatic. If I adopted an unknown mix pup that turned out to be Beagle/Border Collie/Dalmation, it would not have one iota of that Boxer personality or looks I desire. If it's personality traits did not fit in, the possibilty of it being turned in to a shelter at 1-3 years old, when it is even LESS adoptable, would therefore be greater.
You need to realize it is mostly the backyard breeders & puppy mills that are responsible for the overpopulation of purebred dogs. All the good breeders (i.e they show to prove their breeding dogs are correct specimens of the breed, temperment & genetic health test, screen potential owners, will take back & re-home any dogs from their breedings, etc) I have known breed on a very limited basis - maybe only 1 - 3 litters from a champion female in her lifetime. They usually have most to all of those pups placed in reserved homes before they are even concieved. It does not 'take away' a home from a mixed breed - that is the only dog the owners were seeking to get. It is not selfish, it is a personal choice. You would not like it if people told you you could only have one model of car, right? If everyone was told they should drive a subcompact to save gas & help the environment, that sounds great...on paper. But, in reality, some people live in the snowy mountains of Colorado & have 4 kids, so they need that big 4-wheel drive SUV. Fire departments could not use a hatchback as an Ambulance, and construction workers can't haul plywood in a Corolla.
I hope you understand. I wish all pets could have homes, but singling out ALL breeders to blame is wrong and ineffective. Educating people about the importance of spaying/neutering, offering low-cost inner city & rural spay/neuter clinics, encouraging people by offering discounted pet tag licenses to owners of spayed & neutered pets and then actively enforcing licensing laws, and fighting to close puppy mills & place regulations on breeders to discourage backyard breeding (but not penalize good breeders - such as requiring all breeders OFA & CERF certify, etc.) is what would work.
I agree most people on here asking breeding questions are irresponsible backyard breeders - real, reputable breeders wouldn't be asking important breeding questions on this public forum, they would belong to a breed club & have the support of experienced breeders to consult. Those of us who routinely answer questions are who are reading yours now - it will never reach your intended audience this way. They only want their question answered then go on their merry way, breeding junk dogs for their profit. Very sad.

WHY don't you direct your anger to the people actually RESPONSIBLE for the problem???
If IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS wouldn't let their dogs roam the streets and allow them to breed randomly we wouldn't HAVE an overpopulation problem! If animal control would DO THEIR JOB and ENFORCE the leash laws, roaming dogs would not be a problem!
75 - 80% of the dogs in shelters are MUTTS! That is hardly the fault of the purebred breeders! Get angry at the people that are too stupid or lazy to manage their animals!!!
And you posted a link to an 'org' that is linked to HSUS and PeTA. They spew all kinds of lies in their efforts to push their end all animal ownership agenda. If you really love animals you don't want to be supporting the animal rights groups unless you agree with their no more pets agenda.

If we all stopped breeding, dog would become extinct. It is not bad breeders that fill the shelters but irresponsible owners. The ones who let their dogs wander the streets, breeding twice a year. The ones who get that cute puppy but turn it into a shelter when it gets too big.

Unfortunately, there are breeders that do not care what happens to their pups once they've sold them and I feel this is where the overwhelming #'s of homeless pets come from. They'll sell anyone a puppy that has the right amount of $ with no regard to the future of the pup.
Like myself, there are many many other breeders that have stipulations in their agreements. We rescue our own. If for any reason a family that I have placed a pup with can no longer keep or care for him/her, they are to return the dog to me. I make every effort to find them a new family, and if a suitable home is not available, they are more than welcome to live out their lives with us. It is in my agreement that none of them are to be turned over to any type of shelter/hs/rescue what so ever. I helped produce them....I'm responsible for them throughout their entire life.
EVERY DOG DESERVES A HOME, NOT EVERY HOME DESERVES A DOG.

if you are considered a reputable breeder you do a screening process before you let the pups go to homes. now your question should be directed to people who are not responsible or mature enough to care for a pet. every body wants the doggy in the window but not every person deserves to own dogs or cats or any pet for that matter. just to add life has no guarantee. for all we know the world could end tomm. don't knock reputable breeder for others dumb **s mistakes. thats jus MY OPINION
