I just got this pit bull and he is about 2 months old, I got him about 2 weeks ago and since he has been here I taught him to sit in one day. The problem is, he doesn't seem to learn how to let us know he needs to piss or poop. How do I train him to go outside? How long will this take? I'm about ready to give up and put him outside for good. My house is usually **** n span put now it smells of piss and poop.
HELP!!

BY THE WAY, I STAY AT HOME AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING HIM OUT ABOUT EVERY 30 MINUTES AND I STAY OUTSIDE WITH HIM UNTIL HE DOES SOMETHING AND I ALWAYS PRAISE HIM FOR IT. I ALSO BOUGHT HIM TREATS FOR A GOOD JOB.
THE CUTE THING IS, WHEN WE GO SOMEWHERE HE WILL NOT DO HIS BUSINESS IN MY TRUCK, HE WILL WAIT UNTIL WE GET HOME AND I TAKE HIM OUTSIDE.

you might think about crate training... (I dont like that method though) or the way I do it is, if you catch the pup going potty in the house you must rub its nose in it, say bad puppy in a very stern voice and take the pup outside, stay with the puppy out there until they go potty and then make sure you praise the puppy so it knows that it is a good thing to go outside and also that thye did a good thing.
also... puppies are like babies, at 2 months old they arebabies and need to be taught what to do... make sure you take the pup out as soon as it wakes up from sleeping, and about 5-10 minuts after eating or drinking.... if puppies are not taught what to do they will go anywhere.
oh one more thing... to get rid of the smell in your house, as soon as you catch the puppy making a mess it isnt enough to just use soap and water, you have to make sure that all wetness is out of the carpet or that smell will seep into the padding, under flooring and everything. Resolve oxygen powered carpet cleaner was a carpet saver when we got our newest pup.

Why did you get a puppy?????? Do kids potty train in a week???
You take the puppy outside when it wakes up,after it eats, after it plays, and every hour otherwise.
You crate it when you are not watching it.
You reward it when it does go outside.
You DO NOT punish it when it has an accident.
If you cannot cope with a puppy, take it to a shelter and give it up.
This is just a NORMAL part of dog ownership.
If you are taking him out every 30 min, the house should not smell like pee and poop.

Ok you have plenty advice on the potty training lol. Dont give up though, i have a 10mth old pit bull and he is very good about not using the bathroom in the house. But for when there are accidents, i recommend you use Spot Shot to get up the stuff so your house will no longer smell of piss and poop lol

I have always found that kennel training is the best. I have a Boxer, Boston Terrier, and a Pomeranian. Plus two cats. All of my dogs were kennel trained. Remeber most dogs are very clean and most will not potty where they sleep. When you kennel your dog make sure there is enough room for them to sleep and move a little but not run around and play in kennel. As soon as you let them out leash them and let them go right outside. Use the same path every time you go outside. Always talk to your puppy. Your doing great by giving him treats. Use words like "Potty" and "Outside" A LOT.
Say things like " Lets go Potty"
or
"Lets go outside"
It is also a good idea to throw their " little presents" outside take the puppy to the same spot in your yard for him to "do his business" they will know their scent and go to it. It will take time so be patient with him because he is just a baby. But dont give up on him. Just work a little bit more. I promise it will get better but maybe after you pull out all your hair lol. Dont worry. Pit Bulls are smart dogs and will learn you just have to work with them. Remeber that puppies are a lot like babies, about 10-20 minutes after they eat they have to potty. Keep him on a regular eating schedule. Dont leave food out for him all the time. It is also best not to feed him late in the evening. This will prevent problems with accidents during the night. But just like us having to potty when we wake up he will too and sometimes this is in the middle of the night. Again be patient he will grow out of this and sleep all through the night. But I totally agree with kennel training. He may whine the first couple of times but dont cave. Always treat him when he goes into the kennel. This will become his safe haven and after a week or so chances are he wont cry when he gets put in it. Good luck and keep up the great work with your new puppy.

I have a pit bull too. One thing about this breed is they chew a lot and actually potty training is easier if you get a kennel. That will help with chewing too. What you do is get a kennel its not torture trust me they love it. It becomes their home. You have to ignore the puppy if they beg to get out at first. They have to earn their freedom to rome the house. This goes back to the fact they are pack animals and the kennel becomes the den. They won't pee or poop in their den. So everytime you let them out of the kennel you take them directly outside. Let them pee and poop put them back in always pet reward and love them up then put them back in. Then matter of fact like sit down read a book, get online or watch a movie what ever you like. After 30 min do the same thing take them out for a potty break. After the puppy gets bigger you can go for longer and longer periods of time. Once they are good at going outside each time and not in the Kennel then you open the door of the kennel and not for long times at first let them go in and out whatever this is a great time to throw the ball or something fun. Then take them out to go potty again and put them back in. Always when you leave the house they go in the kennel, and at night too when its bed time. After a while they will be ok with the door open. Here is a few links to read up on it. Trust me it works like a charm my girl is now a year and half and we don't kennel her up all day but only when we are gone and she don't chew anything or get into trouble when we are gone either. It is very good for all sorts of things.

Observe your dog closely...where are his favorite places to go...most dogs go as far away from their living space as possible. If so, close off the area, restrict where he can go, more and more, until it is taken only outside. Paper training always worked with me, but my last doggie trained himself when I seal off the areas that he went it...I gave him the opportunity to go outside and he took it to heart. It did not take long to notice that he would stand by the door when he wanted to go. There are Many great training videos on the market that make this a snap. Stop worrying and buy a dvd or tape...makes your life so much easier...these pros really do know what they are doing. Good luck

try crate training on the days that your home take the dog out every 3 hours and when you go to sleep put it in a crate just big enough for him to sleep and eat. as soon as you take him out of the crate take him outside to do his business. usually dogs don't piss and poop where the sleep or eat (unless its a very dirty dog believe me there out there) after about a week it should get better and just keep it up don't get dicouraged over a occasional mishap good luck

First of all, not to sound rude, but puppys will pee and poop all over your house... it is part of owing a puppy.
There are several ways to train your puppy. I suggest searching for house breaking methods on the internet and picking one that you know you can stick to and trying that. I trained my puppy using "puppy training pads". I trained him like I train kittens to a litter box... put them on the pad every chance you get. In no time they will start wanting to use the pad. Then you can move the pad by the door, then outside, then remove it altogether.
Have patience. If you start getting mad at your puppy for doing that, they will get fear and start doing it out of being abused.

Dogs are naturaly a denning type animal. Thats why dogs dig holes and lay in them.Dogs instinctualy will not pee or poop where they eat or sleep. This is why crate training is such an effective way to house train your dog. Go to petsmart and buy the proper size crate for the dogs size that he will be when full grown(Approximate). Best to get a wire crate that has an adjustible divider in it.Reason? Since he is still a little pup you will want to be able to adjust the divider as he grows.versus going out and buying the next bigger size everytime he out grows one. If the area that the the dog is sleeping in is to big he will find a corner of the crate to pee & poop in. This is why the divider crates are good.
First- Put a blanket, couple of his favorite toys, a chewy(Preferibly a pig hoof) to help make it comfortible and inviting to him.
Second- Always feed the pup in the crate. Do not keep water in the crate. He will only sit there and drink when he isn't really thirsty and it will be harder for him to control his bladder. And he will only knock it over and spill it.
Third- DO NOT take him out when he begins to wine or cry(MOST IMPORTANT) because he will soon learn that he can use this as a trigger to get you to let him out. Only let him out when he has settled down and is quiet for a few minutes(ON YOUR TERMS). By keeping some of his favorite things in the crate for him and feeding him in the crate, having him sleep in it at night and by putting him in it when your not home after time he will begin to see the crate as a safe, secure and comfortable place to be (A Den). And will grow to love it.
Everytime you take him out of his crate take him directly outside. DO NOT play with him when you take him out. That way he will associate going outside with doing his buisness and not as play time. As soon as he finishes bring him directly in and then give him praise and play with him. He associate comming out of the crate with going out to potty. This will also help to teach him to go to the door when he needs to go potty Right now as a pup he does not alot of bladder controll ( No pup does) but he will as he gets older. What the crate training does is it teaches him to hold it. Because as I said before they won't potty where they eat or sleep. Eventually after he has matured he will be able to be trusted to accasionally sleep out of the crate at night because he will have better bladder controll through natural maturity and has learned to hold it as a result of the crate training.
REMEMBER! When first starting his crate training? No matter how much he cries or wines (DO NOT!!) let him out. He will eventually get tired of it and stop. Sometime if you put a clock that ticks just outside his crate it will sooth him. It mimics a fetal heart beat and may relax and calm him.

You'll have to spend a couple of days with the dog 24 hours a day. Watch where he goes and just before he's able to lift his leg, take him out. After he goes outside, positive reinforcement.
