According to theologians, Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man. There is significance in the fact that He is both. It was necessary to become man so that He could set an example of how to live righteously in a sinful world and yet remain without sin (we cant do this, of course, but the example He set is one which we should struggle always to achieve). Furthermore, the Bible says without blood there is no payment for sin. From the beginning of the Bible we see sacrifices made to God with the purest animals. Jesus in His human form was a perfect and pure sacrifice. No other mortal man could have served the purpose then of being offered as a sacrifice for everyone elses sin. Therefore, it was necessary that part of the trinity take the human form to accomplish this purpose, so Jesus became the Son of Man. The gospel of John states, "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus) and the Word was God and the Word was with God. All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us...". This passage of the Bible, as well as others, offer clear evidence that a part of the trinity was transformed and became man. However, before the transformation, He was the Son of God. The mystery of the trinity is not something that can be explained. How can Jesus, a portion of the trinity and therefore a part of 'God', be the "Son of God"? Perhaps this is a better question, or at least one to be considered. At any rate, Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man, which is beautifully sung about in the song Fairest Lord Jesus. I think youre question is an excellent one!!!
As far as being the "children of God", we were not created in a manner in which we ourselves reproduce, and so a "mother" is simply not required. We were created by God alone. I am in a minority of Christians who happen to believe that God created the world through evolution, but that certainly causes the hairs on the backs of some peoples necks to stand. It doesnt worry me, however, because its not an issue thats critical to the plan of salvation. At any rate, we as Christians dont have a "mother" in the sense that God required a female individual to produce offspring with. Our natural parents tend to that well enough.
Again, I find your question insightful. Even Christians can not explain the mystery of the trinity, however, and so I hope these answers help you to some extent. And even while you are not Christian, I hope you dont mind if I ask God to bless you anyway!
Have a nice day.

If you read the bible - these things will make more sense. Well first off God is three in one - the trinity - one God - three persons. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mary conceived via a miraculous birth by the Holy Spirit- not a natural one - that is why she is not the "wife" of God - she was the wife of Joseph. It was an act so pure and undefiled that it could only have been done by God. We don't say that we are children of God - the bible tells us that we are. God fulfills the role of nurturer or mother and Father in much fuller degree than human parents ever can. God takes the masculine form in the bible because the Man was created first and historically was generally the head or leader of families, homes, communities. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all God - it's another miracle - three in one - we can't even comprehend His nature fully. But Jesus isn't the Son of Jesus at all - it's three persons one essence. It's like okay - can you count to infinity? No you can't - you know it's real but you can't get your brain around that. Can you break apart an object until you can't break it apart anymore? No- they keep finding that nuetrons are made up of smaller particles and so on and so on. Do you know where the end of space is? No - it's because we're finite beings that we can't comprehend the infinite. Yet, the infinite has given us enough knowledge to know that the infinite exists.

God chose a virtuous woman to bear His Son Jesus. Mary was impregnated by The Holy Spirit. God sent His Son Jesus to be born of a virgin and to eventually die on the cross for our sins. The blood sacrifice had to be perfect, so since no human is perfect, God became flesh in the form of Jesus. You ask about the Trinity. Here is a simple answer: God in three persons; God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit (Ghost). Think of it as Water, Ice and Snow. They are in different forms, but when melted, they are all water.

Jesus is the Son of God in human form. To come to Earth as a human and experience the same temptations that humans experience, He had to come as a baby. That baby was given to the Virgin Mary and was the Son of God. Because God is immortal, he cannot have a mortal wife, therefore Mary could not be his wife. Jesus is the special Son because He came to Earth and accepted the punishment for all of our sins. My Church believes in the Holy Trinity. The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost are all the same person, just in different forms. Kind of like the fact that I am a Mother, Wife, and Daughter although I am just one person. Give you life to Christ today! The Bible assures us that when Jesus returns to the Earth, He is coming in all His glory. Every eye shall see him and every knee shall bow!

Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus being born of a woman (Mary) makes him to be God AND man. God can't die but man can. Jesus had to be in the form of man so He could fulfill His mission (saving sinners from eternal death) and to do so meant He had to die. Through Jesus perfection and sinlessness, God made a blood sacrifice, as was required to deliver us from sin. As stated, God can't die but Jesus God/man can and did. God is immortal but Mary is mortal. God existed and will exist forever. Mary was born and died at a given time. Physical sex was not part of it. Incarnation was. Were people born before Mary ever existed? Yes. So could Mary be their mother? No. All people were born of a physical mom. But not the same mom. God created the world and put it's characteristics into motion. The manner in which children are born is one of them. We all have an earthly, human mom and dad. God as creator, Jesus as savior, are our heavenly, holy, all powerful, Father and Brother. Jesus a special Son? Read the Bible (New Testament) to see how and why. Just a few reasons: Virgin birth, sinless, did no wrong, prophesied, worked miracles, died but rose from death=alive again! Ascended into heaven. Yeah, I'd say that was special. Know of others that did this? No. God has three beings, aspects, or God heads. 1. God the Father. 2. God the Son (Jesus). 3. The Holy Spirit. ONE God . Three Gods included in that God head. Sort of like what we have in a team. There are several members or players but they are all part of the same (one) team. The New York Mets have several players but they compose just one team. Jesus is God and the Son of God the Father. Hope this helps.

These are some very good questions. I will answer some of them and then I will let God answer the rest. First off, we are not all children of God. We are all sinners. Therefore, our sins separate us from God. There is no one that is good enough to make it into Heaven. God sent His Son, Jesus, born of a virgin, to pay for our sins by dying in our place so that we can have an eternal relationship with God as our Father. Jesus was born of a virgin because God was the Father of Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life because He was God. The Bible says that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then God adopts us as His Children and then He gives us the gift of the Holy Ghost, God Himself. It is the Holy Ghost that gives us the power to become the Children of God. Once the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, we must remain faithful and obedient unto Christ. Ask God for yourself if I am not telling you the truth or not, I know that He will confirm the truth, if you seek Him with all your Heart. Ask God if Jesus is His Son. He will answer you because He is alive!
Sincerely Yours, Pastor Jeff Ludin

I am a Christian, but I am not very informed. I will try to answer your question. When they say Jesus is the son of God, he is not the biological son of God. He is the spiritual son of God. It is just like an adopted son. The adopted son is not the biological son of his father, but a son under the law.
He is already the son of God before he was born. The Virgin Mary is a lady selected to bear him into this world. So she is theorectically the biological mother of Christ. She is only made to bear Jesus. She is human and so not the wife of God.
We are all children of God who is our guardian and saviour. We are not the biologial children of God. It is just like the foster homes found throughout the country. Many small children consider their foster parents fathers and mothers, but they are not biologically related. They are also considerede the children of these foster parents.
Hope you get what I am replying.

God does not have a body per se like you and I do. God is what is considered a spiritual form. It's not a matter of male and female with God...it's not about sexual organs, but of the spirit. In the Jewish culture, which Christianity came from, they have many different words for the name of God, like...El Elyon [God Most High] or El Roi [the God who sees]...meaning different things like different characteristics of God. I believe that the whole mother aspect of God can be described in the word that the Hebrews use for this particular characteristic of God. They use the name "El Shaddai" meaning "many breasted one" or the "all-sufficient"refering to the mothering aspect of God...as in the nourishing, supplying things that God does. This would also mean that God would have no need for a 'female' in the human sense of the word. I strongly believe that it has to do with the spirit form of things and not necessarily the physical aspect.
Jesus is considered the 'special son' because he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and not of man, which gets into the whole part man, part divine thing [which is better left for philosophical theology]....that doesn't make Mary our mom...She was only used by God as a vessel to birth Jesus, not saying that she was 'used' by God, but I believe that God has special things for Mary in heaven because of her obedience to Him.
As far as how Jesus could be the son of Jesus, that's better left to ask somebody who studies this type of thing. Maybe if you live near a university you could ask a Theology professor that question.
I think that we need to remember that just because Christians are christians doesn't mean we have all of the answers.....even though some Christians and others believe that Christians should or think they have all of the answers.
I hope this is a start to answering and helping you research your questions.

When Christians say that Jesus is the son of God and Mary the mother of Jesus, we don't believe that Mary is the wife of God rather the servant of God. Just like a servant obeys her master's will and fulfills it , Mary obeyed the wish of her master to give earthly body to his son.
To understand how we and Jesus relate to God, let me give you an example. Let us say that a person has 20 cats who have been with him for a month and one dog who has been with him for five years. That person will say that all of these animals are my pets but he will have a different relationship to the dog than he has to the cats. That is the same relationship that we have with Jesus and God. We are all special to God but he has a different relationship with Jesus than with us.
Jesus is considered the Son of God but he has a godly spirit.

EDIT: just to clarify something to the other answerers, we ( the orthodox community) do revere Mary and worship her. In the bigger churches where there are three altars, the second one is always dedicated to St. Mary (the first is of course dedicated to God, duh)

i appreciate your respect.....
1. yes, Jesus is the Son of God (but at the same time, God....the mystery of the Trinity)....... Mary is not the wife of God though......God is married to no one....God simply used Mary as a carrier of Jesus.
2. the phrase "children of God" is to be taken both literally and non-literally.....literally in the sense that God created us all......non-literally in that he created us all, but through a man and woman who...well, you know how children are made...
3 & 4. How can Jesus be God and the Son of God? The trinity the trinity the trinity :-)........ the idea of the trinity says that there's God who consists of three parts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the holy spirit. These three parts are both individual entities and yet one God.....it's a mystery we won't fully understand on this earth
