I found a beautiful, looks like a springer spaniel puppy who keeps kneading me and won't eat the soft puppy food I bought for her. If she still needs a nipple, what do I put in the bottle? Will regular milk give her diarrhea? She is about 6 weeks old and weighs about 8 pounds. She is fluffy and cute as can be. Help?

Also, what is a truly effective flea remedy?

Ok, it was easier to say I found her because, basically I feel I did, or she found me. Two young girls were in front of the supermarket with a box of them and I said I would take one when I came back out and I walked home with her. She is scheduled at the vet around the corner in 4 days, but she really isn't eating and I'm worried. she is really a baby doll of a calm little doggy. Cute as can be. Thanks for all your answers. They're great!

you can find a mothers mild replacement at about any pet food store i had to use it with the sister of the dog on my picture she was the runt of the litter and needed milk badly. i don't remember the name of the mild replacement i used but its out there then at about 8-10 weeks start weaning the pup slowly by slowly adding food into the milk in a bowl until you have the pup eating nothing but pup food

Does the puppy have teeth?
Usually a weaned puppy has teeth.
If the teeth are just coming through or are really really new small teeth,it may still not have been weaned as the mother dog usually takes care of the weaning process.
You may have found a puppy that wandered off while exploring.
You can speak with a vet or your local feed store or some place like Petsmart or Petco for formula.
Some people swear by goats milk which is now in some grocery stores. Course you have to warm it up for them and if she won't lap it up from a bowl then you may need to feed her with a bottle.
You could also encourage her to take food if you will get a puppy chow and soak it with some of the goats milk.
Soak it until it is halfway soft/firm mushy.

IF bottle fed, she need PUPPY formula. I would stick with warm-water moistened good quality dry puppy food.
Try putting a little in her mouth and she may get the hang of it.

Aks the vet about a good flea control. Advantage has been used on puppies that young at many shelters!! A good flea shampoo for puppies can work too.
The pup needs to see a vet for vaccines and worming.

Check with a pet store or walmart for puppy milk . It comes in a container like baby formula with instructions on how to mix it.
I can tell you for sure that the best flea remedy is Frontline plus for dogs. Go to a pet store or best yet just take him to a vet and ask for the dog to be treated with frontline plus and they will show you the proper way to apply it . you can do it at home next time.
Go to the web site for drs.fosterand smith...they explain a lot about products for dogs and what is safe for puppies. I can tell you that the stuff sargeant and other over the counter flea stuff does not do the job and it is not even safe for our animals....

you found a puppy?? it is illegal to keep any puppy or dog (or cat or kitten) you simply find.. you MUST report finding her to the local SPCA or shelter.. her owner is probably looking for her and you can be charged with theft if you dont report finding her...

DO NOT bottle feed her..if she is 6 weeks old this might cause tummy upset..

pups have sensitive stomachs.. switching foods can upset their tummies.. pablum is gentle .. or a chicken based puppy food (some puppy foods are too fancy and will upset her tummy)mixed with warm water 3-4 times a day... but main thing is first to try and find her real owner.. they may even give you a reward.. call the vets in your area too

best flea remedy is combing with a flea comb and removing fleas and sticking them to tape... flea collars are dangerous

6 weeks is too young to ween...8-9 weeks is normal. Go to pet shop and get dog mild replacement ASAP...your puppy could die of starvation very quickly!
