I work at a fundraising call center, and we're calling for a bunch of political causes right now. If you don't want to get these calls, the best thing to do is to ask them to take you off their list. It'll take awhile, because the parties both have a variety of branches, and then there are individual candidates or groups like MoveOn.org. Our place has an automatic dialer, so we'll keep calling you until we get an answer. If your machine picks up, we put it in the system to call back in a few hours.

Or just turn your phone off. These calls are just part of the process, and they do work. We've raised thousands of dollars in the past few weeks, and the GOTV calls help a lot too. Just please don't get mad at us callers. We didn't invent the system, and we're just trying to do some good here. If you tell us to take you off of our list and then hang up, it will happen. If you say it politely, you will get karma bonus points. You do have to be patient though, because, again, lots of groups and they don't all share lists, even when they're calling through the same place. And the election is only a couple of days away. Believe me, you can't wait? Oh, honey, try being me for a day.

Oh, and the Do Not Call list doesn't apply to non-profits, and thank goodness, too. You have to tell the organization directly that you don't want to hear from them over the phone.

I only have a home phone because it comes with my DSL line. I just turn the ringer off. Campaign callers don't call cell phones. At least the haven't called mine yet.

They called me first then. They start calling my house around 8 am. It's always the machine generated calls too. The actual person wouldn't make the mistake of waking me up more than once!

7 A.M. and I took the phone off of the receiver and just let them talk and I went back to bed.
