CORRECT:
Have you been to the university?
Have you been to a university?
Have you been to college?

INCORRECT:
Have you been to university?
Have you been to swimming pool this week?

It would be: Have you been to the university or swimming pool. Leaving out the "the" sounds like broken English and would peg you as a foreigner.

If you are British-Have you been to university.
If you are American-have you been to a university.
Same with hospital, i've noticed!
I think a swimming pool for both.
