I'll give you an interesting opinion. People tend to judge people on welfare, like why don't they just make more money, get a job - change their lifestyle so that they can be more responsible human beings. But until you've been forced to be on some form of welfare due to your life circumstances - most people don't understand. If you have a baby and no health insurance for instance and you have a job where you don't get health insurance - you're actually taking responsibility for that child by securing assistance with their medical care and expenses. In my opinion what the welfare system needs to do is help the working poor - not people who aren't trying. But there are people who work their tails off just trying to survive. Not everyone is lucky enough to thrive and be rich - there are so many low paying jobs out there. It's not just illegal immigrants who have to take them either. Even people with a college education can be in a struggle to survive. The whole medical malpractice and lawsuits are not controlled or regulated enough - that's why the costs are so astronomical. You can't tell poor people that they can't have kids because then you're saying that rich people are priveledged and if you're not priveledged with enough money and benefits through work you don't get basic human rights. Here's another issue - why doesn't the welfare system offer a way to get out of it - such as assistance with finding better paying jobs that include benefits - ways to better themselves? Why not reward the hardworking poor with opportunities that include those great benefits everybody needs - with the government or county based on their hard work skill and effort? Gosh - most people I know - don't want to be on it if they are the hardworking poor. Life just doesn't always hand you the right cards - no matter how hard you try.

Sorry, that question is a little too general. Welfare is a huge field, and you don't say whether you are doing your paper on the political aspects, the economic aspects, the social aspects or the civic aspects. Have you done any work on it at all yet? What slant are you taking? What is your thesis statement?
You might try contacting the welfare department at your City Hall, and finding out what is happening in your community. It's always easier to comment sensibly on something you are familiar with, and you will be able to speak with more authority about what is happening in your community rather than a generalized picture that is state-wide or nation-wide.

What do you want to know. I know when you are on welfare..it's impossible to get off. I am on food stamps and this year I got a 12.00 raise in my social security check, lost 10.00 in food stamps and my section 8 rent went up 10.00 (if you adding that..I lost 8.00). I don't know how they expect us to better ourselves if they keep doing things like that...they don't. I am so sick on everyone judging and saying we are lazy. I went to back when my son was 3 weeks old. By the time I paid daycare, lost all my food stamps, etc. I was better off not working. I am educated but jobs with benefits are hard to find..if my jobs did have insurance, I couldn't afford it on what I made. The govt. needs to focus more on helping people so they can get off welfare (an 8.00 cut per month is not what I had in mind). Instead they basically punished me for going to work...When 70% of your check goes for daycare..what's left after rent, utilities, food, etc. NOTHING. but hey, I am not on "welfare" any more..the govt done their job. I think everyone who criticizes welfare should have to live on minimum wage, pay daycare, rent, etc for 2 months...their opinion would change (or maybe not). Unfortunately for those of us in the "system" we can't just stay on it for 2 months. Without it, I would have no food to eat, my son would have gotten no medical care at all (which then is abuse and neglect). If you want anymore of my rambling, e-mail me with questions.
