If you only have 2 weeks I would go to Central America, you can see and do more regarding countries. As the region is a lot smaller.
If you come to S.America, distances are greater and you would be restricted to just one country those being - Colombia, Venezuala and Equador (they are the northern ones). If you have to choose you could do a lot in Equador in those 2 weeks.

I would go to South America for backpacking as Central America is too conflicted. Peru would be awesome.

My granddaughter and a couple friends just went 4 or 5 mos ago to Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua and back to Costa Rica she had a great time one of the things they saw was the Panama Canal she thought it was really awesome. I think you would like it from the stories she has told about her trip and the pictures she brought back.

In terms of safety, probably Costa Rica-
If you don't know Spanish- there are probably more English speakers in CR bc they're used to gringo tourists. There are fabulous places in Venezeula, but you would want to go only with organized tour groups, not a backpacking adventure.
That's a hard question when you're dealing with safety...

Although it is technically North America, I strongly recommend you to visit Cancun and the Riviera Maya. You'll find everything here: From Luxurious hotels to log cabins by the sea. Mayan Ruins, small towns, culture, great food, clean and clear beaches, and the warmth of Mexican people.
Hope it helps.

go to the GALAPAGOS ISLANDS in ECUADOR. is a trip you wont regret!!!
with your skymiles you book a trip to guayaquil, ecuador and from there you either take a plane to the islands or by boat. but try and plan this ahead of time. january is a good time because is summer time. it begins in december. if you stay in guayaquil, theres the hilton hotel not far from the airport or the sheraton. you could see them both online.
