The king wants to marry off his only daughter, so he announces that any prince who wants to win her hand must answer a simple riddle. (Yeah, I know, but this is back in the day when that kind of thing was considered acceptable. Go women's rights!)

Anyway - 3 princes turn up to take the challenge. The king tells them: I'm going to put a hat on each of your heads. Each hat will be either black or white. If you see a white hat, raise your hand. The first one to tell me what colour hat they're wearing gets to marry the princess.

So he puts a white hat on all 3 princes' heads. All 3 princes raise their hands.

After a while, one prince says 'my hat is white' (and he and the princess go off to live happily ever after)

How did he work it out?

I feel like I have to add ... there are no mirrors or anything like that - no tricks. It's a logic problem.

If any of the princes is not wearing a white hat, the other two would know immediately that they are both wearing a white hat. Since no one answered immediately, the conclusion must be that everyone is wearing a white hat.

Prince 1 - claimed he was wearing a white hat and won the princess
Prince 2 - was wearing a black hat
Prince 3 - was wearing a white hat
Prince 1 saw Prince 3 wearing a white hat and Prince 2 wearing a black hat. Prince 3 raised his hand, indicating he saw someone wearing a white hat.
Prince 1 knew it wasn't Prince 2, so it must be himself.

They're all raising their hands,
which means they all see a white hat,
which means that they are all wearing hats.
Lucky prince- if I was there, I would have gotten the princess first.

Obviously, each of the three princes saw 2 white hats. They couldn't immediately claim what color their own hat was, though, because it could have been black. Since none of them, after a while, claimed that their hat was black, the first prince (obviously the smartest one) realized that his hat must have been white.

The one who says mine is white reasons that IF his hat were black the other two would already have answered the question because each of them would be able to see one white and one black hat.

because the king said that 'the first one to tell me what colour hat they're wearing gets to marry the princess'. and that prince was the only prince who said what color hat he was wearing.

I think you messed this riddle up. One of the men was supposed to have a black hat, and all three were blindfolded. Each one had their blindfold removed one at a time and the last one was able to guess without even removing his blindfold based on the other two guy's answers.

I think...
As all 3 princes put their hands up the prince who answerd the question would've figured out that the other 2 princes put their hands up they must see a white hat.
I dunno, this is all screwed up.
