Like the first answerer said, you can begin to characterize drinking as alcoholic behavior when it starts to have a significant negative impact on your life, yet you continue to do it anyway. Some common negative impacts might be strained relationships/friendships, strains in your family life, missed days at work, less efficiency at work due to hangovers, discontinued hobbies or interests, trouble with the law, violent or abusive behavior toward people, blackouts in your memory, or any kind of health problem related to your drinking (ranging from serious liver damage to just feeling like crap all the time from hangovers).

Alcoholism isn't actually about the quantity you drink at all. Someone who only drinks once a year, but every time they do drink winds up losing their job, or spending a night in jail, or ruining a close friendship is still an alcoholic. However, most of the time alcoholics do drink often, and so there is an association with frequent heavy drinking and alcoholism of course.

Even this is relative, though, because heavy drinking for one person may be light drinking for another. Women, and some ethnic groups, generally aren't able to digest alcohol as well as men from some other ethnic groups. Weight, and age also factor into it. So, for example, an Asian female that weighs 90 pounds and is 70 years old might be intoxicated from a single beer, whereas a 250 pound 21 year old Irish man would likely need to drink a lot of beers (10+) to really get drunk.

That's a very difficult question to answer. One beer MIGHT be considered enough IF you can't do without it and would do anything to get it. Addiction is defined as becoming dependent upon something that brings you pleasure.

I wouldn't worry unless your drinking is affecting your ability to lead a normal life. The vast majority of us enjoy (sometimes a daily) beer, or three, and on occasion we will go over the top. If you're waking up every day and reaching for a beer before your breakfast cereal, you might be an alchy.

*squints* Their are a lot of highly functional alcoholics in the world.

They have found them selves in a situation that they are able too manage the life that exsists around them with out ending up in trouble at work, with the law, or at home. They are still alcoholics.

Reason why I'm posting this information is because I'm wondering at your motivations for asking the question.

A lot of times a high functioning alcoholic (someone that is chemically or emotionally addicted too alcohol but is still able to manage thier consumption with work and social obligations with out too much drama) will start taking heat from a loved one for health reasons. Normally they respond with "Look! So what if my liver is going too dog food! I got a stable job! My wife and kids are fine!"

Just wondering it this might be where the question is coming from.

it's not so much the quantity but the circumstances. When you drink in situations where you know that only a couple drinks is the right thing to do but you end up drinking more. When you miss out on things because you'd rather drink.

If your life becomes unmanageable due to alcohol.
If you can't stop drinking and still enjoy life.
If when you control your drinking, you don't have fun; if you have fun, you don't control your drinking.
