I have a 2 year old Cocker Spaniel that I just got a couple weeks ago! When I recieved him he was all matted up and STUNK! My babysitter for my children is a avid dog lover and asked if she could groom him ( because that is what she is wanting to be) and I said sure... I mean why not its going to save me money...lol! Well she did so tonight while I was at work and she was here watching my kids. Next thing I know she is calling me telling me that one of the mats he had on his chest was so deep into his skin that when she cut it it ripped open his skin!.. She said that she was going to take him to the vet and pay for him to get taken care of. What I would like advice on.. is he ended up with stiches that I have to go get taken out in 14 days! Should I tell her ( even tho she just spent 150 on the visit the stiches and the antibotics and pain pills) that she needs to pay to have them removed or should I just remove them ( we are already in debt this month) Thanks

Tee

ok for the person who said something about my dog being poorly taken care of and stuff if you read what I said about I just got him you would have realized that it wasn't me that was taken poor care of him.... and for those that said for me to remove them myself.. how would I go about doing that??? If I decided to do that?

I don't know of a single DVM who charges for removing his/her own stitches. That's figured into the cost of the surgery.

The only time it is normally charged for is if you go to a different veterinarian for some reason, and ask them to take the stitches out. (Or, if your dog is aggressive and has to be sedated to take the stitches out...there would be a fee for the sedation part.)

Please don't take them out yourself.

The removal of the stitches should be included in the initial charge, of course the vet will probably charge you a vet visit, mine never has though. It is not hard to take out stitches, but if you are nervous about it, let the vet do it. If the dog is a woosie dog, then you might cut him again.

If you decide to do it yourself, then get a pair of tweezers, and cuticle scissors. With the tweezers, grab one of the ends of the stitch, use the tip of the scissors and slip under the stitch...don't cut until you are sure there is no skin in the scissors, snip, pull stitch out with tweezers, repeat.

Good luck with your new dog!

Note to all pet owners: Never try to cut mats out yourself with scissors, things like this will happen. The only way to safely cut mats out of a dog or cat is with animal grooming clippers.

I don't think that you should chance removing them. Just let her know that the stitches need to be removed and that she should pay for it in a nice way. After all, she is the babysitter for your kids and therefore probably gets some or most of her money from you and she probably wants to continue to be the babysitter. I bet she also feels really bad about what happened and would be willing to pay for it even if she didn't exactly have the money at the time.

I would take the attitude that the vet has carried out a medical procedure on your dog and for that procedure to have been done in total the vet has to be the person to remove the stitches if you do otherwise you have no come back on a problem. The vet has already been paid for this total procedure. Also dont let the babysitter cut your childrens hair.

If your vet is charging you for stitch removal, find another vet! Never have I had a charge for stitch removal, yet I still most always remove them myself - AFTER ensuring that the area is cleanly healed, no sign of redness or swelling, etc. Seriously, if you do have any additional bills, perhaps you could ask her to split them. If she's YOUR sitter and you're broke, I imagine that she's not exactly rolling in the dough!! Good luck.

Well she was trying to help by the sounds of it, and someone poorly cared for the animal, that would be the actual cause of the injury really. Considering it seems she has already paid immensley, when my animal had stitches the removing of them was free, if you haven't maybe you should look into the cost of having them removed if a cost at all, or maybe split the fee with her, it is still your animal that had bad hair to begin with. Don't punish someone for trying to help out.

Well Im only 13 and I have had a lot of doggs in my life basicly I have had over 30 dogs and over 15 cats. I think what you should do is to take him to get them removed because if you do it yourself ther is a 75% chance it might go wrong. Hope it helps.

My dog had cancer, when the removed his toe, one on his back and on his knee, when I took him to have the stitches removed there was NO extra cost. So I don't think you should have anything to worry about. But if the vet charges you to remove them then I think she should pay for them.

Definitily have the vet remove them! And I don't see any nice way you can tell her to pay for removing them so just pay for them yourself, either that or find a way to mention to her that your taking your dog to get the stitches out...she might say she'll pay for that too.

More than likely the removal will be included in the initial 150.00. I wouldn't suggest you remove tham yourself. Dog might make a quick movement and you would have a similar situation.
